If we compare the human body to a cooperative community made up of industrial
units, each one especially concerned with its own task, yet depedent upon the well-being and successful work of all the other units, it is obvious that some means of communications would be essential. In our modern cities, the telephone meets this need. In the human body, the nervous system meets a similar need, and many others; for it controls human thought and conduct ; gives us the power to perceive and appreciate the world about us ; to see, .to move, to hear and to talk. It is the main factor in the control of the internal organs ; and in addition, is constanly furnishing the body knowledge of its environment, interpreting this knowledge and adjusting the body to it. This knowledge (stimuli) is received by sense organs (end-organs of nerves), conducted along sensory nerves to the appropriate centres, and relayed from the centres by means of motor nerves to the muscles or groups of muscles concerned. Some telephone calls have to be relayed through a number of exchanges to the main exchange, i .e., the very centre of the system , other calls can be transferred in a local or subsidiary exchange without going to the main exchange. Just so in the human body, to meet some needs stimuli are relayed through many nerves centres to the main centres (brain) ; while other needs can be cared for in local or subsidiary centres, even without any knowledge on the part of the main centres. In other words, some of our adjustments are conscious and require the cooperation of the highest centre we possess, i.e. , the brain. Other adjustments, very important to our well- being, such as the motion of the stomach and intestines, are made unconsciously, or are cared for in subsidiary centres (autonomic ganglia). Just as the telephone system has a definite plan of exchanges connected by wires which ramify to all parts of the city, so we find the nervous system has a definite plan of centres connected by nerves which ramify to all parts of the body. The nervous system may be classified into : (1) central nervous system and (2) autonomic nervous system. The central nervous system includes (1) those parts of the brain that are concerned with consciousness and all mental activities, (2) the parts of the brain, cord and their nerves that control the skeletal muscles, and (3) the end-organs of all the sensory nerves. The brain is the largest and most complex mass of nervous tissue in the body. It is contained in the cavity formed by the bones of the cranium, and comprises five distinct parts : the cerebrum, the mid-brain, the cerebellum , the pons Varolii , and the medulla oblongata. The cerebrum fills the whole of the upper portion of the skull. The entire surface is composed of layers of gray matter, and is called the cortex because, like the bark of a tree, it is on the outside. The bulk of the white matter in the intenor of the cerebrum consists of very small fibres running (1) from above downward, (2) from the front backward, and (3) from side to side. The fibres link the different parts of the brain with the spinal cord. The cerebellum occupies the lower and back part of the skull cavity. Its function is to co-ordinate muscular movements. The mid-brain connects the pons and cerebellum with the hemispheres of the cerebrum. The pons (Varolii) is a bridge of union between the two halves of the cerebellum and a bridge between the medulla and the cerebrum. The medulla oblongata (spinal bulb) is continuous with the spinal cord , which on passing into the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum , widens into a pyramidal-shaped mass which extends to the lower margin of the pons. The medulla serves as an organ of conduction for the passage of impulse between the cord and the brain. The brain and spinal cord are enclosed within three membranes. These are named from without inward : the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater. The spinal cord is a long cord of nerve tissue which is contained in the spinal canal and runs through the vertebral column. The meningeal membranes and the spaces filled with fluid form a pad enclosing the brain and cord on all sides. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid . The autonomic nervous system possesses a certain independence of the central nervous system. It regulates and controls the visceral activities on which life depends. Ordinarily we are not even conscious of these activities, except as they contribute in a general way to a sense of well-being . The autonomic nervous system includes two classes: parasympathetic and sympathetic. Sistemul nervos
Cerebelul umple toată porțiunea superioară a craniului. Sistemul nervos autonom are o anumită independență a sistemului nervos central.
