every year.

The Cambridge English advantage

Quality Standards
All examinations are administered to meet global standards set out in the Code of Practice. The
code of Practice developed by the central unit for examinations in London, UK sets high
professional standards and aims to provide quality service to candidates and examination
boards.

What is TKT?
TKT is a new test awarded by the highly prestigious University of Cambridge ESOL. It tests
teachers’ knowledge of teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase
teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge
needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. This flexible
and accessible award will help you to understand:

• Different methodologies for teaching

• the ‘language of teaching’
• how to cater to different learner styles
• the ways in which resources and teaching aids can be used
• the key aspects of lesson planning
• classroom management methods for different learners’ needs

Who is it for?

• TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in
the English language teaching classroom. It is ideal for all teachers, whatever your
background and teaching experience, and is also suitable for people who would like to teach
English but do not yet have a teaching position.

What does TKT involve?

• TKT Core Modules:

• Module1 - Language and background to language teaching
Module 2 - Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching
Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process
• TKT Specialist Modules:
Module 4 – CLIL: Content and Language Integrated Learning
Each module consists of a test of 80 objective questions, lasting 80 minutes, which
require you to select the correct answer and mark this on a computerized answer sheet. Read
more information on the Cambridge English website.

How will it help Teachers?

The TKT is an internationally recognized qualification. All candidates receive an award from
the University of Cambridge English for each module of the TKT. This qualification can
enhance your job prospects as it demonstrates that you have a certain level of knowledge of
up-to-date ELT issues.
Preparation for TKT?
All candidates can buy self-study book - “The TKT Course”, when they register. Teachers
can also use the TKT sample papers which are available from Cambridge English website
and by downloading the glossary of terms tested in the TKT and by using the resources
available on the Cambridge Teaching resources website.
The Need of TKT in our State :

In our state where teaching of English starts from Class One as a second language. It is
felt that from Primary to Hr.Sec. level there has been a lack of good trained teachers in spite of
ELTI`s (English Language Teaching Institute`s) boosting efforts as it has its limitations. Even for
MTs and DRGs a level should be fixed to pick up the good teacher trainers for running the
training programmes at different levels.

To solve the problem and to provide quality trainings and teaching of English language,
ELTI proposes an offer `A teaching knowledge test ` TKT prepared by Cambridge University
Press – India Private Limited. It is noticeable that we have offered so far `the certificates for
teachers’ competence level` not for developing `Professional Proficiency level`. Keeping in view
the use of such type of courses ELTI suggests to offer the course for our MTs/DRGs and even
for all the teachers from Primary to Hr. Sec. level whosoever wants to appear in the test.
