ADJUSTMENT

Adjustment is the term used to describe the changes an individual undergoes in order to adapt the
environment. Adjustment begins at the moment of birth and continuous process throughout life.

Ways of making Adjustment

1. Sublimation
2. Compensation
3. Identification
4. Projection
5. Escape
6. Rationalization
7. Repression

Sublimation: The replacement of desire or impulse that can be satisfied with one that can be fulfilled.

Compensation: An attempt to balance some faults or limitation by developing some special talent or
abilities.

Identification: The conscious to balance some faults or limitation by developing some special talent or
abilities.

Projection: placing the blame on others for one’s own faults.

Escape: An attempt to avoid reality by escaping from it in day dreams or imaginations.

Rationalization: Substitutions of reasons other than the real ones for certain act.

Repression: The unconscious inhibition of unpleasant memories.
