1. A ball of mass 2.5 kg strikes a smooth wall horizontally with a speed of 10 𝑚𝑠 −1 and
bounces off it at 7 𝑚𝑠 −1 . Calculate the impulse of the ball. [4 marks]

2. A five tonne truck, moving at 4 𝑚𝑠 −1, and a three tonne truck, moving at 7 𝑚𝑠 −1 , are
travelling along the same road in opposite directions. If the trucks collide and become
coupled on impact, find the:
a. velocity and direction at which they continue to move. [6 marks]
b. loss in kinetic energy. [4 marks]

3. A space probe is launched by rockets. For the first stage of its ascent. Which is in a
vertical line and lasts for 40 seconds, the height x metres after t seconds is modelled by
1
the equation 𝑥 = 50𝑡 2 + 4 𝑡 3 .

a. How high is the probe at the end of the first stage? [2 marks]
b. How fast is it then moving? [4 marks]

4. A weight is suspended from an elastic string. It moves up and down, so that at time t
seconds the distance between the weight and the fixed end of the string is x metres, where
𝑥 = 0.8 + 0.4 sin(0.5𝑡)

a. Find the velocity of the weight at time t. [2 marks]

b. What is the maximum speed of the weight? [4 marks]

5. Given that 𝑣 = 4𝑡(8 − 𝑡), and that the particle has a mass of 3 kg,

a. Find the acceleration of the particle when 𝑡 = 2 [3 marks]

b. Hence find the resultant force acting on the particle when 𝑡 = 2 [2 marks]
c. Sketch the (𝑡, 𝑣) graph for 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 8 [3 marks]
