QUIZ NO. 3

Section: _______________

Solve the Following Problems. Draw the Required diagrams for the following
problems. No complete solution no point. Avoid any erasures. Any erasure will be
a point deduction

1. During a steady flow process, the pressure of the working substance drops
from 200 to 20psia, the speed increases from 200 to 1000 fps, the internal
energy of the open system decreases 25 Btu/lb, and the specific volume
increases from 1 to 8ft3/lb. No heat is transferred. Determine the work per
lb. Is it done on or done by the substance? Determine the work in HP for 10
lb per min. (1hp = 42.4Btu/min).
2. Assuming that there are no heat effects and no frictional effects, find the
kinetic energy and speed of a 3220lb body after it falls 778ft from rest.
Start with the Steady flow equation, deleting energy terms that are
irrelevant.
3. An air compressor (an open system) receives 272 kg per min of air at
99.29kPa and specific volume of 0.026m3/kg. The air flows steady through the
compressor and is discharged at 689.5kPa and 0.0051m3/kg. The initial
internal energy of the air is 1594J/kg; at discharge, the internal energy is
6241J/kg. The cooling water circulated around the cylinder carries away
4383J/kg of air. The change in kinetic energy is 896J/kg increase. Compute
the Work.
