Syllogism

For my rhetorical term, I was given Syllogism which is the use of a remark or an image

which calls upon the audience to draw an obvious conclusion. Like a rhetorical enthymeme, but

more compact and frequently relying on an image. I chose to do a PowerPoint to explain my

word because it's easier to understand it when you can physically see it. I organized my slides by

giving the definition first for the class to get a little background first and learn how to say the

word. On the next slide, I explained what syllogism is which has three parts: major, minor, and

conclusion. On the third slide, I showed examples of syllogism. I had pictures/ diagram to make

it easier to understand. An example of syllogism is that if all fish swim (major premise), every

shark is a fish (minor premise), therefore every shark swims (conclusion).

For my hand out, I wanted it to only include the most important points about syllogism.

First, I spelled out how to pronounce syllogism. Second, I broke the word down and explained

the meaning of those words. Then, I explained the meaning or definition of the word. Next, I

gave two examples with the major, minor, and conclusions bolded which helps to break down

the lengthy definition. I also added in two pictures which are more examples of syllogism with

one being a diagram. I chose to do my hand out like this because I think it gives the class a good

summary of my PowerPoint and gives them the important or necessary material. I prepared for

my presentation be practicing my PowerPoint and making sure that I understood my word

therefore I could explain it to the class if they had any questions. I also made sure to look over

my handout several times to be familiar with it.
