3-4 hours/day for 6-7 months. My answer may not be specific to Mechanical stream but it
will definitely land you in 70+ marks/Top 100 club. Here it is :- Are coaching notes and R.K. Kanodia books sufficient
to score 70­80 marks in GATE?

1. If you have enough time( > 1 year) , start from basics read everything from standard books

but do make notes of whatever you read in a separate notebook. If you have time constraint (mechanical) if I am preparing on my own without any
(<1 year ) , just rush through the books or coaching notes and develop a basic idea of each coaching?

2. Solve "gate previous year questions" book (by  made easy preferably as it is "almost" error

3. Mere learning previous year questions will fetch you 50 marks.

4. Make a formula notebook and note all formulas of your course in it (approx 2000-2500
formulas) revise it periodically.When 2 months left for gate, revise it daily. this will land you
in 55-60 marks zone coupled with above mentioned steps.

5. All above 4 steps should be executed together in a parallel manner.

6. In last 1-1.5 month, leave everything going in this world which is not related to gate,make
books/notes your sleeping partner, breakfast partner , dinner partner.Remember in order to
achieve exceptional things you have to work hard exceptionally.

7. Join a good test series, give 5-10 mocks at interval of 5 days each and try to beat your
current score. During this phase you will get insight of where you are lacking and where you
need to work upon. This will work like an injection of confidence in you. Make a fresh
notebook and keep a record of mistakes done in all the test series you have attempted.

7. In last few days, revise only your short notes + formula notebook + mistake of mocks as
many times as possible.

Follow these steps and believe me, no power in the world can stop you from achieving 70+
marks/Top 100 rank.

Follow Vinayak Manoj's points and i would like to add a couple more
* If you have time watch NPTEL video lectures . The lectures are so good that you will
understand the most difficult topics.
*  Spare atleast last 15 days for revision. This is the most important  part. You might have
read everything, but what is the point if you dont  remember what you have read.
* and finally before the test day, get atleast 7 hours of sleep. Be peaceful . All the Best :)

1.      First go through GATE syllabus completely.
2.      Then discuss with your seniors or already qualified students how they prepared for
exam.
3.      Get standard text books,
4.      See the weightage of each subject (you will get it readymade), based on weightage take
priority of subjects.
5.      Go through last 10 year question paper, to get to know the quality and difficulty level of
questions in each subject. And start reading each subject/topics from standard text book.
6.      After completing each topic try to solve previous year questions from that topic.
7.      Repeat instruction 6 for each and every topic of full syllabus. 
8.      After completing each subject try to solve previous mock test(available in net), if you
feel comfortable with that subject then keep it for final revision or else work hard till you get
command on it.
9.      Repeat instruction 8 for all subjects. And keep revising already completed subjects.
10.  Finally try to solve 8-10 full length mock tests.
11.  If you follow above instructions sincerely, no one can stop you from getting AIR <200.

One and only strategy to crack gate exams,i .e practice.The more you practice ,the
more you achieve. My answer would be specifically for Mechanical Engineering
Stream.

Allocating 6 hrs a day for preparation would lead you to great scores.

The topics can be known and the propability of asking questions from the topics
can also be known based on previous years question papers.

Preparing a short notes for each and every subject is must and should for those who
aspire good scores . It acts like a handy Bhagavadgita while revising all topics at
last.

Some of the most important topics are:

1. Production technology——(17–18)Marks

2. Thermal Engineering——-(12–14)Marks

3. SOM———————————(10–11)Marks

4. FM————————————(8–10)Marks

5. TOM———————————-(8–10)Marks

(1) How to prepare for Engineering Mathematics for GATE 2017 ?

You can start preparation of engineering mathematics from your first / second year because
engineering mathematics is a part of first and second year syllabus of B.E/ B. Tech course. If
you start preparation for engineering mathemetics as early as possible it would be good for
you because candidates either get admission in B.E./ B. Tech. course after clearing 12th
examination or after completing Diploma in engineering. In both the levels you must have
read mathematics which is not more different than engineering mathematics of B.E./ B.
Tech. level. Just after completing 12th or after completing Diploma in engineering with
mathematics as one of your main subject you get admission in engineering you study
engineering mathematics in first and second year syllabus of B.E./B. Tech. so you would be
in a flow. I mean to say if you any how would be able to continue this flow from 12th /
Diploma in engineering to engineering from first year to final year you would be master of
engineering mathematics finally.
