B Coon Evaluation Background: Bryce Coon is in his sixth year at Wootton High School and his sixth year teaching in MCPS .Mr Coon teaches 2 supported sections of NSL, 2 Advanced Placement Psychology sections and 1 section of Global Issues in the Social Studies Department. STANDARD I: Teachers are committed to students and their learning. Mr. Coon demonstrates understanding about how students develop and learn. . Mr. Coon interjected stories that clarified the content at a personal level. “I had a teacher in high school....as a cross country runner, | heard stories about....After | got married, people would always ask me (11/06/2017) Mr. Coon planned an activity during the lesson that challenged students without overwhelming them. “For the current events assignment, be sure to use sources that are relevant to the information you need to find. [your article] will be about one of the phases of development and connect to the concepts that you've learned this unit’.(11/06/2017) Mr. Coon set the agenda for the day with understanding that students may be distracted by the impending calendar changes. “First, for today: we need to make up some time for the delay and possibility of not being here tomorrow. Two things if we don't have school tomorrow: one, we need to get through all the information today and (2) the test will stil be on thursday. As always, all materials are on Classroom" (11/06/2017) ‘As a result students have an increased opportunity to engage in the content at different levels. Mr. Coon consistently communicates key message to students (This is important, You can do this, | won't give up on you) Mr. Coon in response to a student request to get water during the task, stated “Sure but let's see what you first’ after looking at the work he stated "That's good"(11/06/2017) Mr Coon used wait time when he asked students to “think about what is the key word in libertarianism” and waited for students to respond. Responding “Good, good association"(11/06/2017) Mr Coon circulated the groups asking’What do you guys have? How are you doing over here. Good that’s the right idea’(11/06/2017) As a result student were motivated to work through the task and achieve the mastery objective STANDARD II: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. Mr Coon successfully relates lessons to his students’ lives and has the students make real-life applications. Mr Coon in the warm up asked students to reflect on how President Trump had become president and represented the Republican party. Students, using prior knowledge, stated that it was because he had won the party's nomination to be the candidate for president, (11/08/2017) In asking students to identify the major parties in the American Political system he asked students to recall which parties had put up candidates for the Presidency. Students were able to identify Republicans and Democrats and also the Libertarians and Green Party.(11/06/2017) In the group activity students were asked to think about what the main issues were that they had seen in the political campaigns of each party during the recent elections to help them identify the issues in the sources.(11/06/2017) When students had to identify which party the statement regarding government help and how much government should be involved in citizens everyday lives, would be connected with, he asked if President Trump supported Obamacare and if this meant that the Republicans also stood for less government control in the lives of individual Americans.(11/06/2017) As a result, students make strong connections with their own lives, and are able to share their thoughts, ideas and past experiences regarding the 2106 presidential election and identify key issues for each of the major American Political Parties. Mr. Coon demonstrates broad content knowledge in AP Psychology. Mr. Coon clearly explained the ideas of the different theorists and psychologists and compared their ideas. “Erikson has differnt stages; like Freud - they are psycho sexual but not weird; you can develop loving relationships but not necessarily with a partner but that’s the idea”. (2/6/2018) Mr. Coon demonstrated his knowledge of what was on the AP exam and could focus students on what could be found on the exam in May. "Now, genders and social connectedness - if you look at what's on board. We talked already about gender but they use language differently in your textbook. Know the generalizations about this from the text as it is something that the AP exam could talk about....lack of acetylcholine; write ACH as that is how it is refered to on the test in May’,(2/6/2018) ‘* Mr. Coon is able to easily bring in examples from real life to further clarify the content. “Physical abilities peak at adulthood; for example - you can sometimes hear stories that you peak at 27 if you are a runner - not so in my case - only if you're a professional runner....one thing we talk about is how older people are treated differently when it ‘comes to driving; insurance rates won't go up if you get older.” (2/6/2018) Students are able to focus their attention on the concepts and ideas that will be found on the unit test and the AP exam in May. STANDARD Ill: Teachers are responsible for establishing and managing student learning i ive learning environment. Mr Coon subtly and effectively managed student on task behavior in a non-confrontational manner throughout the lesson. ‘© MrCoon circulated throughout all four groups @ minimum of 4 times per group and ‘engaged them in identifying key issues of the party they were discussing.(11/06/2017) Mr Coon addressed student groups and asked them to stay on task and also stated, “Remember you should be listening to your classmates” in a firm but non confrontational manner that refocused students back on to the task when some students engaged in side talks.(11/06/2017) © Mr Coon, in the whole class discussion guided student focus by asking them “Did you hear what MXXXX said, guys?”, “let's listen to our classmates”, and also by addressing students by name as a reminder to stay on task.(11/06/2017) Asa result, students who were off task quickly modified their behavior to comply with expectations and focused on the lesson in both group and whole class activities so that they were able to complete the written task and participate in class discussion Mr. Coon creates a classroom environment that fosters students listening to each others’ contributions. © For the Current Event activity, students were to complete the assignment understanding that they would be grouped to share the information they found. “Tomorrow, two people who read other articles and will share with each other and goal is to have a discussion about what you all read”.(2/6/2018)
