 PREFACE

The presentation of this work has been prompted by the fact of presenting
a structural design and computations of a FOUR-STOREY COMMERCIAL
BUILDING as partial fulfillment of the requirements in CE14/CE14D (Structural
Design 1).

In this work the designer in his desire to be some help, tried to present
clearly and concisely the most common used method in structural design of
reinforced concrete members today, the ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN
METHOD.

This work provides an opportunity for students and other interested person
to gain an additional knowledge and have an introductory reference and outline
in their structural design. Code provisions and formulas have been provided too,
as supplement.

Since, this is an initial attempt to the part of the designer along this line is
endeavor, the designer gives allowances for comments and suggestions from
those who are better knowledgeable. The designer also welcomes connections
that are to be made for errors, physically and mechanically committed in the
presentation of this work. Hence, readers and critics are encouraged to shave
their constructive ideas for the improvement of this design for the future
demands.
