Circle K Capital District Governor
Hi Capital Key Clubbers!

My name is Jose Leoncio and I am serving as the Capital District of Circle K International (CKI)
Governor! I am a junior at American University (Go Eagles!) in our nation’s capital, studying
International Relations. Just like you, I was involved in Key Club and served as a Club Secretary,
Lt. Governor, and District Secretary. I found my home in Key Club and that is why I continued
onto CKI.

One of the benefits of being involved in Key Club, is having the network of the Kiwanis Family!
CKI is the service collegiate organization in our Kiwanis Family. In the Capital District, we are spread out
among 23 universities! We are working on getting that number to grow. CKI is similar in structure and
focus as Key Club. We work on similar projects and have similar goals. In this year of service, I challenge
each of your clubs to work with your nearest CKI club in making a stronger impact in our district. The
benefits of working with CKI are endless! We can offer great college advice, mentorship, exciting
service opportunities, and more! Please contact me at governor@cdcki.org to connect you to your
nearest CKI club!

Seniors, as you are applying to colleges, I hope you will consider continuing in developing
your servant leadership heart and take the next step to CKI. If you are looking for more
information about a certain college, let me know. I can connect you with CKI members at that college.

I hope you continue to have a great year of service. Being a student leader can be difficult at
times, but the benefits are so rewarding. If you ever feel like giving up or feel that you are burning out,
remember why you started in these positions in the first place. Always remember your purpose in your
club and the whole organization as a whole. You are an essential part of our Kiwanis Family.

Yours in Service,
Jose Leoncio
District Governor

GOVERNOR’S PROJECT
Leave a Legacy
What is Leave a Legacy?
This year’s Governor’s Project, Leave a Legacy, is all about changing how
we think about service and how it affects our communities. The goal is to
permanently impact our communities by giving them tangible contributions.
Hopefully, this project will allow clubs to be more creative in finding their own
ways to leave a legacy in their homes schools cities and communities. The
only guideline for this project is that you must give, contribute, make, or fund
for something physical that can be used by or will improve the image or
standing of the community, group, or area that you will help.

Examples of how can your club can participate.

• Installation of a park, ramp for people in wheelchairs, basketball courts
• Donation of Gym Equipment to School or Local Gym
• Paint a Mural
• Plant a garden, tree, flower boxes
• Create a new walking trail
• Repair/Paint Homeless Shelters
• Build a Bookshelf for a Library

More than 10 million kids enter a children’s
hospital like Johns Hopkins
Children's Center across North
America every year.
To provide the best care for kids,
children’s hospitals rely on donations and
and community support, as Medicaid and
insurance programs do not fully cover the
cost of care. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals has helped fill those
funding gaps by raising more than $5 billion,
most of it $1 at a time through
Miracle Balloon icon campaigns.
Its various fundraising partners
and programs support the
nonprofit’s mission to save and improve
the lives of as many children as possible.

For more information please visit the Children’s

Miracle Network at

This year, the Capital District a

goal is to raise at least $35,000
for Children’s Miracle Network

Service Highlights
Annapolis High School- Division 4A
3

Since July, Annapolis High School Key Club

has served dinner at the Lighthouse Shelter
once each month, a local homeless shelter.
They have had the Thirst Project come speak
at their school and hosted a Miracle Minute
in which they raised over $1,000. They plan to
raise $12,000 to build a well with the
foundation as well. The Key Club is in the
process of hosting a penny drive for UNICEF in
which whichever teacher receives the
most donations will get pied in the face. They have also hosted a food drive
where they received over 505 bags of packaged foods. They hosted a
mental health day run, helped set up Lights on the Bay in Annapolis, and
helped sell apples with the local Severna Park Kiwanis.

(Division 4A LTG)

Division 15A/Division 15B

On September 29, Divisions 15A and 15B
had a joint DCM at the D-Day memorial
and after the DCM, they had a service
project. The DCM was a success with
over 40 attendees.

Key Clubbers worked together in order

to clean up the walking trail that loops
around the memorial. Students brought
rakes, work gloves, and buckets to move
brush from the walking trail.

Key Lead er

On November 9-11, Capital District held their second Key Leader this year. Key Leader is
Kiwanis’ values-centered, weekend leadership education program for high school students.
Key Leader events are open to any 9th-12th grade students (in or out of Key Club). Key
Leader focuses on the concept of service leadership and five principles: integrity, growth,
respect, community and excellence. The weekend is casual and includes hands-on
exercises; writing and reflection activities; cooperative, team activities; physical challenges
and more.

Turner Shenal from Division 2E described his experience by saying “Key Leader was
extraordinary. All the kids enjoyed the activities the volunteers had for us, even though it was
too cold to do anything outside. The food was the best I had ever had at a camp, the
volunteers were very kind, and I made a bunch of friends. The instructors were very good at
guiding us and they were able to convey their hands-on lessons on leadership well. In all,
this year's Key Leader was a very good experience!"

Membership Growth
Tips for Recruitment and Retainment:
1. Advertise your club and club meeting dates around the school.
(Use flyers and posters to help advertise)
2. Utilize social media and post information about the club and post pictures of
service projects
3. Talk to people about Key Club (explain that we don’t make keys)
4. Keep members active by having service projects during meetings
5. Inform members about large-scale Key Club events such as Fall Rally, Key
Leader, DCON, and ICON
6. Award members for the activities they complete (ex. Key Club member of the
month
7. Make your meeting fun by having icebreakers
8. Make sure your club becomes consistent with meetings and service projects

KEY CLUB DUES

Early Bird dues were due on November 1st and the regular dues were due
December 1st. Dues are important to determine your club’s status in the
district. A club in “Good Standing” submits their dues. If a club misses the
deadline, then the club is suspended, and they get an official notice from the
District Treasurer and must pay a $100 fine, along with their dues the
following year, to be in Good Standing again. If a club fails to pay dues 2 years
in a row, they are inactive and must be re-chartered again. Another reason to
pay dues are so that you can attend fun conventions such as DCON and ICON,
apply for scholarships, and run for officer positions.

The link above will give you a step to step on how to turn in dues.

TURN IN DUES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU HAVEN’T YET
