 PREFACE
“Raising Standards in Education and Beyond”

Planning Forum is an academic platform for the

students of the department of Economics. It ensures
enrichment of knowledge of students in the field of
Economics with arrangement of academic and non-
academic programmes like Special Lectures, Socio-
Economic surveys, Field visits, Practical
sessions/Interactive sessions, Observance of days of social
importance and Inter Departmental & Inter Collegiate
Competitions, Personality Contest, Quiz Contest, and
Elocution Competition etc., It helps the students to
improve their leadership skills and ability to plan and
execute.

Planning Forum handout describes the essence of

the department of Economics, St. Xavier’s College for
women, Aluva. The department since its inception has
endeavoured into various activities attributing to holistic
development of both students and staff. With this motto in
mind the department of Economics established Planning
forum and initiated its activities during the academic year
of 1991-92. The Planning forum exist for the overall
progress of students’ skills and talents especially with the
underlying agenda of building up a carrier oriented and
futuristic students without giving up their moral values.
The Forum also undertakes various research activities with
the sole purpose of “giving back to society”. Also the
Planning forum aims in bring out both academic and
cultural skills of the students by providing the students
with platform of annual manuscripts. The students were
also given the opportunities to meet and listen to eminent
personalities through the doors of forum activities aimed in
developing their social skills and all to shape them up as
the leaders of future.

Overall, this is a pride moment for the fraternity of

department of Economics to showcase the noble actions, in
spite of all the hurdles endured, taken up for building up an
innovative but sensitive bunch of students who are
empowered and never take failure as a reason for not to
succeed!

PLANNING FORUM
As a part of the curriculum 'The Planning Forum'
functions under the Economics Department. The Forum
Conducts Debates, Quiz competition, Essay competition
and Survey etc.,on a regular basis. The foundation for this
forum was laid in the year 1990-91. The Planning forum of
the Department of Economics was formally inaugurated by
Prof. Antony Issac, Former Principal, St.Paul‟s College,
Kalamassery on 25th January 1992

A REVIEW
The year 1991-92 marked the beginning of
Planning Forum activities in St. Xaviers College under the
guidance of the Department of Economics. Prof. Antony
Issac, the Principal, St.Pauls College, Kalamasserry
inaugurated the Planning Forum on 25th January 1992.In
his inaugural address, he explained the necessity and
importance of economic planning in India and the
achievements made so far .He added that we really are
proud of the fact that we have become a self sufficient
economy in food grains and an exporter of food grains to
even developed countries like USSR.

Later, two seminars were conducted under the

leadership of Dr.K.C.Sankara Narayanan, HOD, Applied
Economics, CUSAT and Dr.A.I.George, Economics
Department, St.Pauls College, Kalamassery. The main
themes were on „Economic Planning for the Last Forty
Years‟ and “Kerala‟s Economy and Economic Planning”.

Group discussions were also held in which students

participation were earnest and appreciative. We were also
fortunate to hear Prof.M.P.Menon, Head of Indira Gandhi
University of India. He gave us a talk on the Importance
and Relevance of Planning. The talk was highly significant
as it served to emphasize the fact that planning is an
indispensable aspect of successful living. Later, the Forum
sponsored a lecture by Prof.Emmanuel Cardoza, HOD of
Economics, Maharajas College, Ernakulam.The topic
chosen was “Stagflation in India”. The discussion on this
current topic of concern brought to light the co-existence of
high production combined with a higher level of
unemployment. The Forum also organized a seminar on
“Industrial Backwardness in Kerala”. The guest speaker
was Prof.Muraleedharan, Maharajas College,
Ernakulam.Although the topic seemed very simple and
nothing novel, Prof.Muraleedharan, was successful in
presenting the topic with its pros and cons. It was highly
informative and the students highly benefited from it.

St.Xaver‟s College, Aluva The talk was on the „Need for

Planning‟ In her inspiring speech, she specified the need
for planning in a society with limited resources and
unlimited wants. She suggested resource allocation as a
solution to this basic economic problem .She also
explained the new concept of Peoples Planning, which
means diverting power and finance to the hands of the
people thereby achieving progress through out the state
especially in the rural areas. The manuscript “ECHO
Rays”, prepared by the students was released on the same
day by Rev.Sr.Percy, Principal of the College. Inter
departmental quiz was organized by the students of
economics and prizes were given to the winners. Students
were given chances to attend seminars on various topics –
women empowerment, personality development, future and
better planning.

In the academic YEAR 200-2008, the activities of

the Planning Forum was inaugurated by Prof.
A.I.George,HOD of Department of Economics, St.Paul‟s
College ,Kalamassery on 20th September 2007. A Hand
written manuscript prepared by the students “Eco Beats”
was released on the same day.

2007-2008 being the Ruby jubilee year of the

department, as part of the Ruby Jubilee celebration an
exhibition of major agricultural products of Kerala , „Agri
Expo‟ was organized on October 4th and 5th 2007. A model
showing impact of pollution on agriculture was also
exhibited. The annual quiz competition for the students
of the college was organized on 9th November 2007. The
planning Forum of the department organized an
intercollegiate debate competition on the topic „Is
globalization anti-poor‟ on December 1st 2007. An
Intercollegiate Essay competition on the topic “Increase of
self-financing colleges in Kerala Higher Education
Scenario” was also conducted.

The activities of Planning Forum was inaugurated

on was inaugurated on 15th October 2008 by
Adv.Anupama Johny , Alumni of the department and she
gave a talk on „Domestic Violence Act‟ the hand written
manuscript of the students „Rhythm‟ was released. The
students organized variety entertainments for the inaugural
function. The annual quiz competition for the students of
the college was organized on 14th September 2008. In the

academic year 2009-2010, the Planning Forum was

formally inaugurated by Prof. Miniamma HOD of
Economics, St.Paul‟s college, Kalamassery on October 1st
2009. This was followed by a talk on “Global Warming
and Sustainable Developemnt” She shared with the
students her experiences on the various spheres of
development. An Inter departmental quiz was conducted
by the students of economics and the Manuscript „Eco
Magic‟ prepared by the students was released on that day.
In the month of August 2009, the second year students
conducted a survey on “The Effectiveness of Pulse Polio
Programme in Aluva Municipality” The report of the study
was submitted to the Research Cell. The annual quiz
competition for the students of the college was organized
on 10th September 2009.

Under the auspices of Planning Forum, the students

organized a Forum called „Sensacion‟ which started
functioning on December 4th 2009.The Forum which is
open to students of all departments conducts a meeting
once in a week to discuss and debate current events. The
activity of the Planning Forum was inaugurated by an

alumni of the department Ms Anby Baby, Senior Sales

Manager Metlife on October 4, 2010. Ms Anby Baby gave
a talk on 'The Changing Financial Scenario'. The
manuscript of the department for the year 2010-2011,
'Economic Imprints' was released by the Principal, Rev Sr.
Percy. The Planning Forum conducted the annual general
quiz competition on 23 September 2010.

The Open Forum „ Sensacion‟ is continued to

conduct weekly meetings to discuss on current topics. The
planning Forum in association with the department of
statistics conducted a survey among the third year degree
students to analyze the degree of utilization of the facilities
and opportunities that the college offers to them.

As a whole the Planning Forum gives stimulation to

the students of economics.

MANUSCRIPT MAGAZINE
The Planning Forum of the department has a
practice of making Manuscript Magazine every year by the
students. The final year students take the initiative in
preparing the Manuscript magazine for the year. The goals
of practice is to make the Students an understanding of
their own influences and aesthetic values as writers and
how their own work fits into larger literary traditions and
demonstrate the ability to produce a polished, professional-
quality portfolio of creative writing and an understanding
of how to submit the work for publication. The students

study visit to Cochin Stock Exchange on 13th September
2012. The students attended theory and practical sessions
on the functioning of the Stock Exchange.

prize and Abi George & Rajesh P.R won second prize. The
