 Param 10000 – Param is Asia’s second biggest computer developed by the Centre for

Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune in March 1998. It can perform


100 Giga flops calculations per second.
 VDU- Video Display Unit
 Display screens are of two types- Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Flat Panel displays.
 Floppy disks also known as diskette. It can also be used as input device.
 Magnetic tape- it is a faster means of data transfer, at least five times faster than floppy
disks.
 Printer (Output device)-
Dot Matrix printers-it can print any character or image on paper that can be created in
the computer memory or displayed on screen.
Laser printers are high quality print outs and offer higher resolution than most of dot
matrix printers. It can produce colour outputs and print on both side of the paper at the
same time.
Line printers can print a complete line at a time and then advance the paper to the next
line. The speed of the line printers varies from about 300 lines / minute to 2000
lines/minute (LPM).
Daisy Wheel printers- it is named after its shape.

 Common Operating Systems: MS-DOS, UNIX, 0.S. /2 AND WINDOWS.

 Program Manager (PM)-PM has several commands with which you can run your
own programs, switch between programs or copy material of one window to
another.

 Web browser-computer program-
 Web browser knows how to go to web server and how to interpret a set of HTML.
 ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network) -It has emerged as a powerful tool
worldwide for provisioning of different services like voice, data and image
transmission over the telephone.
 VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited) is India’s only provider of commercial
internet access. It provide two services as “terminal dial-up” (text only ) services
and the “TCP/IP” graphic services are split into two components.
 INTRANET- Intranet is a corporate TCP/IP network which delivers reliable,
feature rich applications that share five core, standard based services –directory,
e-mail, file , print and network management.
