Proficiency in English and Dutch for LAW students

To be admitted to a Master’s programme of the Utrecht University School of Law, all students including Dutch
applicants must provide proof of proficiency in English in the form of results from one of the following English language
tests:

• IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 7.0 overall band, at least 6.5 for writing.
• TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 100, at least 23 for writing; institutional scores are not accepted
(the TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062).
• Cambridge Certificates
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade.
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.

Chinese students have to take the IELTS or TOEFL test.

Exceptions:
You are considered to be proficient in English and do not need to provide an English language test score if:

• You obtained your secondary school diploma and/or Bachelor's degree in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New
Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA or South Africa, or you obtained an International Baccalaureate Diploma or
European Baccalaureate Diploma (taught in English).
• You have completed a Bachelor's programme at a Dutch university (if taught in English).

Applicants for a Masters’s programme taught in Dutch must also provide proof of proficiency in Dutch in the form of
results of one of the following Dutch language tests:

• NT2, programme 2 (Dutch as a second language, Level 2), administered by the Department of Examinations
of ‘DUO’. It is advisable to register with DUO as soon as possible. For Law programmes students have to do
an extra test.
• Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal: ‘Profiel Academische Taalvaardigheid (PAT) or ‘Profiel
Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs (PTHO).

Note:

• If you are a native speaker of Dutch, but you obtained your relevant degree at a university outside the
Netherlands, please contact the International Office.
• If you have no knowledge of Dutch, it takes at least one year to attain a relatively good command of the
language.
