TEACHING PROCEDURE: (Attention focusing, Anticipatory Set, Interest Approach)
Activity:Show students three different plants - a grass, a broadleaf herbaceous plant, and a
woody plant
Leading Questions:
Will these plants have the same parts and grow from the same general areas?
LESSON SEQUENCE:(demonstration, direct instruction, key questions, activity
description, leaning activities, procedure, discussion outline)
Introduction and attention focuser 5-10 minutes
‘Make overheads and masters of plant anatomy
Students work through activity #1 on plant anatomy - look for grass plant that is in the
flowering stage (may need to freeze sample during growing stage) 30-40 minutes
Teach Lesson (K.Q. format) - Discuss the importance of learning plant parts. 30-40 minutes.
Give a quiz on plant parts.
Review, conclusions, reflection 10-20 minutesPROBLEM SOLUTION:
Layout of the Plan...
Key Question #1 What are the various parts of the plants?
*Teacher note - Hand out student activity sheet. Use transparencies.
Key Question #2 What are similarities and differences between the grass and bean part?
Similarities Differences
Both had leaves, stems, roots Shape of leaves
Both green- no bark Venation of leaves
Presence of nodes Stem structure (depending on plant size
and rate of growth)
Growing Points
Flowers, if present and buds
Compare cut ends of each plant specimen.
*Teacher note - Show students cut ends of each plant specimen. Have the students describe
what they observe.
Key Question #3 Where are the growth regions of these plants?
1. Dicots
a, tips of stems, roots and cambium layer
2. Monocots
a. tips of roots
. center of leaf whorl
. rises as plant matures
Key Question #4 What is the oldest part of a grass leaf blade? A legume leaf?
1. Tip 2. Base
