Lesson Plan Format: Friday January 18, 2019

Teacher Laura Frederick and Madison Hileman Grade Level Honors English 12

I. Content and Standards: Standards for this lesson are aligned with
the content, the text and materials.
II. Prerequisites: Understanding of current events and ability to analyze
text for author’s purpose and/or point of view.
III. Essential Questions (provide a framework) 1) Can a society based
on hate survive?
2) What role does language play in a society?
3) Is perception reality and can reality then be controlled?
4) Is technology taking us closer to the world of Big Brother?
IV. Instructional Objective: The student will analyze articles and relate
these articles to 1984 using comparison and contrast strategies.
V. Instructional Procedures: BDA Students will be given 3 short
newspaper articles to read that deal with the concept of Big Brother
and Lack of privacy, they are to choose two from here, and then one
on their own. The students will be writing responses to each issue
following the format of:

Issue #1 ______________________

Describe the issue (one full paragraph) 5 points

Summarize the author’s viewpoint (one full paragraph) 5 points

Explain your opinion (one full paragraph) 5 points

The students will have three responses that are modeled like the
above format. The students have the entire period to work on this, and
are encouraged to ask questions if they have them throughout the
class period. This activity is due on their arrival after the weekend is
over.
VI. Materials and Equipment: 3 articles that are provided by the teacher
that the students can choose 2 via Google Classroom. Students will
then choose another article on their own. Google Classroom.
Chromebooks.
VII. Assessment/Evaluation: Students will turn in analyses of each article
they are presented with and the one that they choose. The students
are being graded on each section that needs to be filled out. I will be
able to gain an understanding of how each student feels on a certain
topic through this assessment. I provided a mini-rubric on the
assignment sheet given to the students. This assignment is worth a
total of 50 points.
VIII. VII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities: Current events are
used in this discussion to help the students make connections with the
text to the real world. All of these documents will be available to be
printed or to be viewed online or on a cellphone in the classroom and
outside of the classroom. The students have the entire period to work
on this assignment as well as the weekend to ensure that they will put
thought and effort into this assignment.
IX. Technology: Students will be using the Chrome Books, Google
Classroom, and the electronic copies of the articles for this
assignment.
X. Self-Assessment I am planning to review the documents that were
turned in by the students to see whether or not they can successfully
analyze a text to determine author’s purpose or point of view. I did not
teach a lesson on how to do this beforehand because these are honors
students; however, if I find that future classes may need this, I will use
this lesson to determine that factor.
