DC-DC Converter Applications Filtering ‘When reducing the ripple from the converter, at either the input or the output, there are several aspocts to be considered. Recom recommend fering using simple passive LC networks at both input and output (see figure 6). A passive RC network could be used, however, the power loss through a resistor is ‘often too high. The self-resonant frequency of the inductor needs to be significantly highor than the characteristic frequency of the dovice (typicaly 100KH2 for Recom DC-DC converters). The DC current rating of the inductor also needs consideration, a rating of approvimately twice the supply current is recommended, The DC resistance of the inductor is the final consideration that wil give an indication of the DC power loss to be expected fram inductor. Output Filtering calculation: Caleatng of the tering components can be done using Iron This frequency should be significant lower than the switching frequency of the converte, Example - RC seri: Operating frequency = 8SkHz max, thon, fe =10% of 85 KH = 2,5 Kitz “aie task, ‘er gr 470K Tot rs 1 1 (eat [ese Common Mode Chokes Bottor results in fitering can be achioved it common mode chokes are used instead of a single choke, CComman mode chokes are muligle chokes sharing a core materia so tho common modo rejection lectcal noise which comes through tne power line and returns tothe noise source through somo type of ground paths common mode noise) is higher Ploase efor to our page “Common Modo ‘Chokes for ENC* also part ofthese application notes. These can he used for input fitering as wo as forthe output sido, Limiting Inrush Current Using a sores inductor atthe input wil mit the current that can be seen at switch on (see figue 7), It wo consider the circuit without the seros inductor then the input curents given by, However depending on your application design ‘and loadsituation may interfer with the calouated titer so testing in the final application and re-adjustment of the ccomponant's values may be nacossary. \When choosing a value forte tering capactor please tako care thatthe maximum capacitive load is within the specications of the corwerte. Fave 7: put Cron &ohage at Sch On exp (=t R \ac When the component is initially switched on ) this simplifies to This would imply that for a SV input, with say ‘50mOhm track and wire resistance, the inrush ccurtent could be as large as 100A, This could ‘cause a problem for the DC-DG converter ‘A series input inductor therefore nat ony filters the noise from the internal svtching cicut, tut also its the intush currant at switch on ‘A ypical value for an input inductor used to reduce the inush curent is Imi or higher ‘Atypical value for an inductor used to fiter the Input is 50-300uH, So although the circult diagram may look simi, the input inductors have very diffrent functions and cltferent values. Ifa common mode choke is used as an inrush current itr ithas the added advantage over a single inductor thatthe inrush currents flowing inthe two windings canoel out and the frit is less likely to go into saturation Short Circuit Protection in 0.25W - 2W Econoline converters Inthe low wattage, unregulated converter Port- folio we offer continuous short circuit protec- tion (option). Espacially in applications where ‘he output of converters is connected via a plug and sockel loan external madule the chances of having a short circuit across the output is quite high. A conventional unregulated conver- {er can withstand a shor circuit across the aut- pus for only limited time, The same coniton ‘can occur wth high capactve lads i they have alow ESR. RECOM uses balancing between transformer core saturation ratings and the maximum elec- trical ratings ofthe switching transistors in the primary sce oscilator o create a converter that ccan withstand a continuous short circuit (<1 Ohm) across the outputs without fling However, this is NOT an overload protection IF the coverters are overloaded but not short circuited, the convertars may stl overheat and fal AS 2013 ‘wwu.recominternational.com
