Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley was born on October 18, 1844 in Kent, United Kingdom.
Growing up, Wiley was a bright student and had a love for chemistry. He continued his passion
at Hanover College in Indiana. Wiley graduated in 1871 with his medical degree and continued
to teach chemistry at Purdue University. In 1883, Wiley was offered a position at the US
Department of Agriculture. There, he created his legendary “poison squad” where he had
volunteers eat different food and test the impact it had on their health. He is best known for being
the leader in passing the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and his work at the Good
Housekeeping Institute laboratories. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 fought for safer foods
and drugs carried out by the federal government. Wiley died at age 85 on June 30, 1930 from old
