Act 3:

Scene 1:

 Ferdinand enters bearing a log

 Speaks about labor and how he is enjoying it because it serves the woman he loves
There be some sports are painful, and their labour
Delight in them sets off. Some kinds of baseness
Are nobly undergone; and most poor matters
Point to rich ends. This my mean task
Would be as heavy to me as odious, but
The mistress which I serve quickens what's dead,
And makes my labours pleasures (3.1.1-7)
 Miranda enters (Prospero is on the stage too, listening to them from the distance)
 Miranda asks Ferdinand to take a break from the work and let her work for him
 Ferdinand refuses and asks Miranda for her name and continues to flatter her
 He tells her that he is a prince, she does not really care about his title
 She wants to know if he loves her, and after he told her that he does, she proposes
marriage:
At mine unworthiness that dare not offer
What I desire to give, and much less take
What I shall die to want. But this is trifling,
And all the more it seeks to hide itself,
The bigger bulk it shows. Hence, bashful cunning,
And prompt me, plain and holy innocence!
1 am your wife, if you will marry me
If not, I'll die your maid. To be your fellow
You may deny me, but I'll be your servant
Whether you will or no. (3.1.77-86)
 They leave the scene, Prospero steps forward and says:
So glad of this as they I cannot be,
Who are surprised withal, but my rejoicing
At nothing can be more. I'll to my book,
For yet ere suppertime must I perform
Much business appertaining. (3.1.93-97)
Scene 2:

 Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo enter, drunk

Tell not me. When the butt is out, we will
drink water; not a drop before. Therefore bear up and
board 'em. Servant monster, drink to me (3.2.1-3)
 Stephano assumed the title of Lord of the Island
 Caliban telling them about Prospero
 Ariel appears on stage (invisible to others) “Thou liest” – stirs up trouble
 They plan on killing Prospero (Stephano will be the king of the island with Miranda as
his queen)
 Ariel plays music
Be not afeard. The isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not. (3.2.134-135)
 Men decide to follow the music and kill Prospero afterwards

Scene 3:

 Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, Adrian, Francisco and others

 Alonso gives up hope on finding his son, who is assumed to be drowned
 Antonio tells Sebastian that they should kill Alonso that night
 Solemn and strange music, and PROSPERO on the top (invisible). Enter several
strange shapes, bringing in a banquet, and dance about it with gentle actions of
salutations, and inviting the King etc. to eat, they depart.
 Men are not sure whether to eat
 Thunder and lightning. Enter ARIEL, like a harpy, claps his wings upon the table, and
with a quaint device the banquet vanishes.
 Ariel accuses Alonso, Sebastian and Antonio of driving Prospero from Milan and
leaving him and his child at the mercy of the sea (“You are three men of sin”)
 Revenge: the powers of nature and the sea took Ferdinand
 Prospero (invisible) praises Ariel for good work:
Bravely the figure of this harpy hast thou
Performed, my Ariel; a grace it had, devouring. (3.3.83-84)
 Alonso, desperate, runs to drown himself
 Sebastian and Antonio pursue to fight the spirits
 Gonzalo tells the younger lords to run after Antonio, Sebastian and Alonso to make
sure they don’t do anything rash
