COS & CHST POW 2018 – 2019

During this year, I will:


 Provide interpreting services to the RIT community in some content
areas within the core team and limited assignments outside the
core team area
o Interpret class lectures with modest pace and concrete
content; provide Sign Language-to-English interpretation for
clients who use slow-paced English
o Assess language needs of all consumers and adjust
interpreting where possible to ensure accurate interpretation
o Schedule an observation by my manager
 Perform duties that aid in the provision of high quality service
including preparation, consumer relations, and professional
development
o Confer with consumers, preview available materials, and
research additional resources to prepare for assignments
o Maintain effective communication with consumers,
operations staff, and colleagues regarding the provision of
service; confirm all assignments to consumers

Goal: Improve understanding of the field of statistics and learn ways to
represent new vocabulary in ASL.

Method: Watch seminars on commonly used statistics terms, meet with


experienced colleagues. Establish a peer-mentorship with Penny Ardnt.
I will also read the posted articles in MyCourses before every class.

Metric: At the end of the year I will have a written log of our meetings,
notes of new vocabulary, and know the definition of these terms, as
well as ways to sign them.
Professional Growth & Development

 Develop and implement a professional development plan


 Participate in structured in-service-training
 Work with a mentor

Goal: Learn about the challenges experiences by African American Deaf


students and professionals.
Method: Attend workshops and/or panels offered by RIT, NTID or
RADSCC.
Metric: Sign in to event if needed.

Goal: Become more comfortable with different courses/topics within


the Science & Engineering colleges.
Method: Establish mentorship with Penny Ardnt, and establish a
meeting time to review terms and concepts from my courses, as well as
team a class together.
Measure: Penny Ardnt will provide detailed feedback looking for
incorporation of the terms and vocabulary we discussed during our
meetings.

Goal: Improve fingerspelling expressive skills.


Method: Work with ASL Consultants/consumers/Deaf friends to
identify when I do not produce clear fingerspelling.
Metric: Improved receptivity when reading fingerspelling & fewer
requests for clarification from ASL Consultants/consumers/Deaf
friends.

manager by October 12, 2018
 Complete self-appraisal by April 5, 2019, and discuss with

Goal: Get a variety of signers perspective’s on concepts in Math.


Method: I will meet with students and other interpreters weekly and
discuss common terms, concepts, and how to best represent them in
Math.
Measure: After interpreting for Math courses, I will log concepts and
signs used and discuss them for conceptual accuracy and
improvements.

Goal: Maintain open and timely communication with managers/


coordinators/buddy and members of DAS Staff.
Method:
 Put all due dates/deadlines/important meetings on my desk
calendar, as well as ASDS schedule
 Set up meetings with manager/buddy/mentor as questions arise
Metric: Timely email responses and correct Kronos punches, clear and
open communication is achieved.

Goal: complete a biomechanical evaluation


Method: schedule an evaluation with a trained evaluator
Metric: completed evaluation document

Goal: I will provide my contact information so I am available to answer


questions from all consumers.
Method: I will send out an email to all consumers at the beginning of
each semester.
Metric: Keep a record of the emails I send.

Collaboration

 Work with students, interpreting colleagues, NTID, RIT, and the


greater community
 Participate in staff meetings, special projects, committees

Goal: Hone my leadership skills.


Method: Serve on the PD Committee.
Metric: Record meetings attended and participated, as well as log
special projects.
Goal: Hone leadership skills.
Method: Obtain an M.S. degree in Service Leadership & Innovation.
Metric: Provide a transcript with grades.

Goal: Hone leadership skills.


Method: Apply for Step Forward Leadership.
Metric: Feedback and evaluation from peers, as well as a Step Forward
Leadership certificate, if accepted into the program.
