NEWMONT Deepa (ates o Peel Rion ana eros ners Ce eMC ce CE ee Cero eee Crete es Exploration Activities Outlined her isthe range of exploration activites that Newmont Waihi Gold may carry out if access is granted by the landowner/occupier. Stream Sediment Sampling ‘Samples of silt and clay (up to 2kg) are gathered from sites along stream courses, generally at stream junctions, Rock Sampling Fragments of rock are chipped trom rock faces using a ‘small hammer. Samples are up to 5kg in weight and aro often colected during geological mapping Geological Mapping ‘Tis involves recording the cheracterstios of surtace rock. Gridding ‘Tris is where a grid pattem is laid out to systematically collect samples over an area. Wooden pegs or biodegradable flagging may be used to assist in laying out the grid. In heavily vegetated areas a narrow path may be cleared through undergrowth to allow access to sample sles or rock outcrops. Soil Survey ‘The geologist will collect up to tkg of sub-surtace soll, using ‘a spade or hand auger. Auger holes are backliled and sods replaced afterwards. Sample intervals vary from 25m to 200m apart, Pa ‘Ths enlalls pacing a portable instrument on the ground fora few minutes while it measures and records rock proporti, such as gravity ive Ground Geophysics Active Ground Geophysics Resistivty surveying introduces a fow-voltage current into the ground at 2 locations and then measures the electric field this forms in the ground at a range of locations away ‘rom these point sources, Airborne Geophysical Survey ‘An airborne survey measures magnetic and electromagnetic responses to aid geologic mapping. The geophysical equipment is towed by 2 helicopter or fixed wing light airatt, which traverses the area at low elevation. The equipment pictured here (HoistEM) is similar in appearance to the frame of a rotary clothesline. Drilling Adil rig bores @ 100mm diameter core sample to varied depths at varied angles. The rig may take up to several ‘weeks to complete work at a site. During ailing activity ‘water and dling fuids are contained within the site. When ling work is fnished all equipment is removed and the site Is rahabiltated. A dil ste is typically within a 10 metre x 10 metre area, All Areas Rehabilitated ‘When any exploration activites are complete, disturbed areas are restored to a condition that isthe same as, or better than, before activities began. Permits The Crown Minerals Act 1991 sets the oad legislative policy for Crown-owned minerals in New Zealand, These minerals include all naturaly ocourring gold and silver and some coal, aggregate, metalic and non-metalic mineral. ‘The Minister of Energy, through the Ministry of Development, grants permits for investigation or extraction (of Crown-owned minerals. ‘The Crown Minerals Act 1991 provides for three levels, of permits; = Pro acting = Exploration = Mining ‘Access onto land covered by any of these types of permits requires the permission of the owner and occupier. No perissio: For more information about permits please contact the Ministry of Economic Development, Crown Minerals. (See back page for contact details) Prospecting Permits Prospecting permits are generally granted by the Crown for ‘one or two years forthe purpose of conducting low impact prospecting to identity areas warranting more detailed investigation Prospecting may include: * Goological mapping ‘+ Rock or soil sampling (hand heid methods) ‘© Geophysical surveys (hand held or aerial) To conduct more detailed investigations, a company can hen apply for an exploration permit - most likely over a smaller but more promising area of land Exploration Permits Exploration permits are generally granted with conditions ‘nd obligations for a period of five years, after which the permit holder may apply to extend the term ofthe permit fora further five years but must reduce the permit area by more than half Activities conducted under exploration permits include the reconnaissance activities alowed under a prospecting permit, described here in the prevous section. Exnloration permits also allow more detaied investigation Of the mineral potential ofthe area through dling, If diling Is required Newmont personnel wil seek to negotiate a separate dril access arrangement with the landowner and occupier A ciiling programme may consist of three to four dil holes to each programme. A series of programmes may bbe undertaken in an area. Results trom the programmes determine whether further investigation is warranted or ‘whether rehabiltation is to commence. Mining Permits ithe resuts of exploration actites indicate the presence of a viable mine, a company can then apply fora mining permit. Mining permits allow forthe extraction and processing of crown minerals. Mining can only occur if access is granted by the landowner/occupier and if the permit holder also has appropriate resource consents obtained through the public Resource Management Act process administered by district and regional councils. ‘The presence of a prospecting permit or exploration permit over an area of land is no inalcation that 1:1000 this will lead to a mine being developed, Exploration activity in the Hauraki District over the past 20 years has resulted in the discovery of only ‘two new mineable gold deposits. Crown Minerals quates the exploration success rate as one mine from one thousand prospects. The phase from discovery to a mineable deposit can take many years.
