Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The software Brain Pop has some very accommodating
features. For ELL students, the website can be translated into different languages such as
Spanish, French, etc. This can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on
Brain Pop followed by the language that is being used. Students will be able to access their
Brain Pop accounts from anywhere whether that be at school or home. If accessing at home,
they will need parental permission before accessing the internet. Students with learning
disabilities may get additional help from the teacher if they are having trouble navigating the
softwares.
Lesson idea implementation:
For the lesson I will introduce Martin Luther King Jr. to the class and explain how important of an
icon he was in Georgia History. I will then have the students log on to BrainPop in a computer lab
and and gather information on Martin Luther King, Jr. and what his impact was on the Civil Rights
Movement not just in Georgia, but in the South in general. The students will then participate in a
Think-Pair-Share activity where they share with a partner of their choosing some of the information
they have found.

The students will then engage in their activity. They will take the role of a newspaper journalist
with their partners and compose a mock newspaper article as if they were writing it after his
assassination. The students will write about MLK Jr’s legacy and the roles he played in the Civil
Rights Movement. Once the students are finished, I will have them share the articles with class and
in will grade them based on presentation and content in the article. To conclude the activity, they
will write down one thing they learned about Dr. King that day and it wills serve as their ticket out
the door.

Reflective Practice: As far as extending this lesson, if this lesson is taught close to MLK day in
January then we can have the students hang their articles around the classroom or on the wall
outside of my classroom to display their handwork so other students in my classes and around
the school can read and appreciate Dr. King’s legacy and role as an activist in Georgia.
