WELDING

ME 061L
WELDING
• A process of joining metals.
• is the process of heating and melting
metal so that you can join two pieces of
metal together.

SOURCES:
• Flame produced by combustion of fuel
with air or oxygen.
• Electric arc, struck between an electrode
and a work piece between two electrodes
• Electrical resistance offered to passage of
current between two or more work piece.
TYPES OF WELDING
1. Gas Welding
2. Shielded Metal Arc Welding
3. Atomic-Hydrogen Welding
4. Electro-Beam Welding
5. Electro-Slug Welding
6. Flash Welding
7. Friction Welding
8. Laser Welding and Drilling
9. Metal Spraying
10. Plasma-Arc Welding
11. Resistance Welding
12. Spark Erosion Machining
13. Stud Welding
14. Thermal Welding
Electrode
The welding rod is the piece of wire connected
to the welding machine. A current is fed
through this wire, which helps to join two
pieces of metal together firmly.
SAFETY

Work in a well-ventilated area. The

process of welding contaminates the air
with vapors and gases that are hazardous
to inhale. You’ll want to work in an open
space with open windows or doors while
you weld.[4] Never weld galvanized steel as
it produces dangerous gas.
SAFETY
The area should be
ensured that no
flammable or easily
combustible materials are
present. Fire extinguisher
or water source should be
present for emergency
cases.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)

Protects from:
• Radiation
• Flying Particles, debris
• Hot Slag, sparks
• Intense Light
• Irritation and Chemical
Burns

Wearing fire resistant head

coverings under the helmet
where appropriate.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)

Welding gloves will

protect your hands from
electrical shock, heat, and
radiation. Always wear
gloves when welding
something.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
Protects against: heat, fires
•burns
•radiation
Notes: pants should not have
cuffs, shirts should have flaps
over pockets or be taped
closed
According to ANSI Z49.1-2012, Welding
and Cutting (4.3), “appropriate protective
clothing for any welding or cutting
operation will vary with the size, nature and
location of the work to be performed.
Clothing shall provide sufficient coverage
and be made of suitable materials to
minimize skin burns caused by sparks,
spatter or radiation. Covering all parts of
the body is recommended to protect
against ultraviolet and infrared ray flash
burn.”
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
The ANSI standard requires
all welders and cutters to
wear protective flame-
resistant gloves, such as
leather welder’s gloves,
which provide the heat
resistance needed for
welding. A gauntlet cuff
offers additional arm
protection. Insulated linings
should be used to help
protect areas exposed to
high radiant energy.
