FROM THE HEART OF ANCIENT IRELAND Even today, the sabbats of Ireland are rich with the pagan lore of their past. Witta, the Old Religion, offers all pagans a trove of wisdom and practice to enrich the tradition of any follower of Earth religions. ‘Most books on Irish paganism focus solely on Celcic mythology, with- out examining how those heroic myths shaped the Irish religion. Witta: An Irish Pagan Tradition supplies che missing link essential to understanding the Irish religion in a culcural context. Here, you will find a comprehensive framework for practicing and understanding the Old Religion of Ireland, including specifics on magickal practice and the Celtic Tree system ... practicing Irish spells and magick ... constructing traditionally inspired Wittan rituals ... symbology for each cool used in Wittan religious practice ... guide- lines for contacting spirits and faery folk, and more. Also provided are detailed appendices on Irish gods and goddesses, Irish terminology, magickal herbs, and traditional Irish music, as well as a bibliography for further reading. Ifyou are of Irish descent, Witta will put you in couch with your her- itage—although the knowledge of both Irish and non-Irish pagans will be enhanced by access to Witta’s abundant body of lore. Witca is more than an obscure religion buried in Ireland's past; it rep- resents a way of life, the way every Irish clan and community once viewed their world and the forces that shaped it. The beauty and sim- plicity of thar world is alive today. If you choose to take the life-affirm- ing path of Witta, you will find that picce of ancient Ireland which lives in your heare. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Edain McCoy was born in South Bend, Indiana to parents from diverse eth- nic and religious backgrounds who always encouraged her to explore the his- ory of religious thought. As a teenager she began secking the roots of her birth religion. That search, and her increasing feminist outlook, eventually brought her back to the Old Religion. A chance meeting with a hereditary Wirtan at a ceilidh (Irish dance) in Houston led her to study the Irish Tradi- tion of the craft. Though she prefers to practice as a solitary, she was initiated into a large San Antonio coven, and has since been active in several other ‘Texas covens, most of them following the Irish Tradition. A graduate of the University of Texas, Edain now lives in the Midwest where she is continuing her formal graduate studies in cultural history. She is also active with the local Irish Arts Association, Her other interests include country decorating, needle crafts, aerobic and Irish dancing, music, and her beloved Shetland sheepdogs.
