Three songs on poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay
for mezzo-soprano, viola, and piano

The Rain Is Full Of Ghosts was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association,
and composed during the summer of 2006. The commission letter gave me latitude to write
whatever I wanted, but expressed a hope that voice would be included.

I decided to take the opportunity to realize two long-standing ideas. The first was to write a
song cycle on poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay (partly at the urging of my wife, who loves her
poetry); the second was to compose a work for voice, viola, and piano.

I had long been aware of Brahms’ two songs with viola, and later became familiar with the
four published songs of Charles Martin Loeffler. When I decided to investigate further, I found that
the repertoire of songs with viola is actually quite long and still growing. As a working violist myself,

as well as a composer who enjoys writing for voice, the possibility of adding something to this canon
seemed like a natural thing to want to do.
