Half Whole Diminished Scales www.pianogroove.

com

The half-whole diminished scale is an 8 note symmetrical scale. The scale alternates half and whole steps
until the scale starts again. Due to the repeating interval pattern, there are only 3 half whole scales to learn
for all 12 keys. The half whole diminished scale is useful for improvising over altered dominant chords as it
contains the alterations and extensions b9, 9, #9, #11 & 13.

Practice Tips
Practice the half whole diminished scale in the groups that share the same scale. Start
slowly and gradually increase the tempo. Try to learn the scales by memory as soon as
possible.

Once you are familiar with the scales, play through the 2 examples licks above. Next,
transpose the licks into a few different keys (or all 12 if you have time!). Finally, experiment
and try to come up with your own lines using the half whole diminished scale.
