ON SONORITY
ART AND TECHNIQUE
dispositions physiques.
Un travail raisonné, intelligemment
conduit peut faire subir de sérieuses
transformations aux lévres et cet ouvrage
a pour but de donner & I’éléve, par des
exercices méthodiques, les moyens de
développer, modifier, transformer ses
propres facultés en lui fournissant la
possibilité d’acquérir une jolie sonorité
sur la flate.
Le travail est divisé en cing parties.
La premiere traite de la couleur, de
Phomogénéité des sons dans tous les re-
gistres,
sorat.

One should not expect this collection
1 provide an infallible method of ae
uiring « beautiful tone.
This is ota motterthatcan be treated
Of theoretically: however, after years of
work and reflection, and taking my per-
sonal experience as a basis, 1 have
become convinced thara “beautifultone”,
leaving aside any ideal one may choose
tomake ofi, is notexclusively dependent
‘on natural physical optitudes.
Methodival work, intelligentie pursucd,
can bring about important changes it
the lips, The abject afthe present work is
w give the student the means, through
methodical exercises, of developing
‘modifying and transforming his own abi
liries and at the some time to offer the
possibility of attaining a beautiful sono:
rity: on the flute
The work is divided ino five parts
‘The first deals with the timbre and
homogeneity of tone in evere register
‘The second deals with suppleness of
tone, especially in the low register.
The third deals with entacking and
slurring notes:
The fourth deals with fullness oftone.
The fith deals with the management
of tone in interpretation.
Afier long hesitation, t seemed 19 me
that the publication of this collection
would perform a useful service, since 1
an affirm that only after long work at
the following exercises did I achieve a
satisfactory improvement of my embou-
chure, anu that at the present time these
exercises still form the basis of my per
sonal work and of my teaching.

TIMBRE AND HOMOGENEITY OF TONE
in the 3 Registers
passages d'octave.
dans tes 3 Registres
Ofthe five kinds ofexercise contained
in this volume, this is by far the most
difficult to proctise.
There are two reasons which make a
homogeneous tone dificult on the ute
the difference of timbre between the 3
registers:and the digfieultvofproduction
In producing the following notes ~
‘piven in order of difficulty -
the column of air has to passthrough an
increasingly long passoge, and will there-
fore emerge increasingly weakened and
lacking in warmth; forthe opposite reason
the following notes - again in order of
digfculty -
SSS
will emerge with inereasing vigour
colour, and height, inleed somerimes
00 much 50.
The same remarks apply fo the middle
register, though to a lesser degree since
the lips can here no longer call on iil
their resources, Being alrcady under pres:
sure in overblowing an octave
These highly important observations
show us that the quality, sirengch and
accuracy of @ note depend, on the one
ham, on the position of the lips over the
mouthpiece and, on the other hand, on
the strength and speed of the column of
dir. In dealing with the write aud Tow
registers, the more logical opproach is 10
divide the sounds into 2 almost equat
groups those, near the mouthpiece, that
fre easy to play and the niore lifieult
ones further avcay. Later, we shall fitul
that this procedure nor only has the
advantage ofremealving the faults referred
10 abore, but also makes it easier 10
achieve homogeneity from one octare 10
another
