BACKGROUND TO PROJECT
My sponsor, Mike O’Neill, currently needs accompaniment when driving his truck because of mobility
issues. Mike uses his Quickie 2 wheelchair to get around. Even though his mobility is limited, thanks to
‘modifications to his truck, he is still able to drive, However, as previously stated, he needs someone with
him to lift his wheelchair in and out of the truck. To regain his independence, Mike wishes to have a
custom wheelchair lift designed for the rear seat of his truck.
The design of a wheelchair lift will require knowledge obtained from several courses in the Mechanical
Engineering Technologies (MET) program offered at the New Brunswick Community College. These
topics include (1) formal report writing, (2) SolidWorks design, (3) technical research, (4) moment
calculations, (5) stress calculations, and (6) weld-length calculations. The six abovementioned topics will
bbe covered by writing of the project's technical report, designing of a three-dimensional model of the
lift, researching the costs of materials for the lift, and calculating the applicable dimensions and material
strengths necessary for the lift, With this wide range of topics covered from the MET program, this issue
is an appropriate senior-level Engineering Technology project.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION/SCOPE
This project will provide a feasible design for a rear seat wheelchair lift for a 2016 Ford F-150 Extended
Cab pickup truck, for the project’s sponsor. The sponsor has requested a wheelchair lift for the rear seat
of his vehicle that operates “under control.” Specifically, “under control” means the operator will have a
controller attached to the lift, will be able to move the lift in and out of the truck with the controller, and
the lift will be designed to avoid a crane-tike lifting system. The avoidance of a crane-like system will
ensure the chair can not swing into the truck, causing damage to the truck or the chair itself. The design
will be considered successful if it meets the previously mentioned “under control” conditions.
a) Project Deliverables
Below is a description of the deliverables, and the work that will be needed to complete
them. For a lst of the project deliverables, please see Appendix A- “List of Project
Deliverables.”Signe Gurholt

The design of the lift will be completed with the applicable shear, moment, and welding
calculations. SolidWorks models of each piece will be modelled, and these pieces will be
assembled within the program to show the completed design. Cost of the lft, if
fabricated, will be provided, To accomplish this, metal, fabrication, and door companies
willbe contacted for quotes. A suitable material will be selected after considering
available options for cost and weight. Assembly drawings will be created for the design
to show how the components will fit together. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) will be
completed on the SolidWorks models to analyze the deformation of the design. The
SolidWorks models will aso provide a visualization of the actuation of the design and its,
application to the vehicle.
Schedule
‘An overview of the activities need to complete this project is given below. For a full week by
week schedule, please refer to aor ~"Weekly Action Plan Schedule.”
For completion of the project, the following will need to be completed: Material
selection to complete the design and finite element analysis; calla supplier of garage
doors to select a torsion spring, and get a quotation for it; mode the lift pieces on
SolidWorks to create assembly drawings, show actuation design, and show application
to vehicle; and contact metal suppliers for quotes on possible design metals to calculate
the price of fabrication.
FEASIBILITY
With the abovementioned knowledge obtained from courses in formal technical reports, CAD for
manufacturing design, technical writing and research, engineering mechanics, and machine design, all
aspects of the proposed project will be completed in a timely manner. Included in the subsections below
are my personal credentials and available resources for the project.

Personal Credentials
‘Over the last year, | have taken, and achieved high marks in, the previously mentioned
courses in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. These skills, coupled with the
“Weekly Action Pian Schedule,” will allow me to effectively complete the project on time.
For amore complete definition of my credentials, please see Appendix C— “Resume for

help achieve the project deliverables: Dana Betts, P. Eng.; American Door Supply's website;
Apex Aluminum Extrusions’ website; Sunrise Medical’s website; Keith M. Walker’s Applied
Mechanics for Engineering Technology, 8" Ed.; and Robert L. Mott’s Applied Strength of
Materials, 5" Ed.; and, also by Robert L. Mott, Machine Elements in Mechanical Design, 5"
Ed, With Dana Betts as my engineering advisor, Ill be able to consult him on my progress
and gain useful insight for the design. The three websites will be used to get quotations on
‘materials for the lift. And the three textbooks mentioned will be consulted for formulas for
applicable calculations. In addition to these resources, a complete list can found in Appendix
D~“Available Project Resources.”
REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION
May | have your authorization to pursue the design of the wheelchair lift as my Applied Research
Project? This project's requirement for knowledge from several courses from the Mechanical
Engineering Technologies program makes it an excellent senior-level Engineering Technology project. ,~
With your approval, | will begin work on the project that will be completed to the standard of your
reading pleasure.
