EXPLANATION TEXT

An explanation text is kind of text which tells or explains processes relating to forming of
natural, social, scientific, and cultural phenomena. In addition, an explanation text gives you a
step by step explanation. The explanation sequence contains a sequenced explanation of why or
how something occurs. This explanation is written in paragraphs. The genre of explanation text
can be found in science, geography, and history textbooks.

The concept of an explanation text:


a. Purpose :
 To tell “why” and “how” of the forming of the phenomena.
 To explain why things are as they are and how they are formed or made.
 To explain the processes involved in the evolution of natural and social phenomenon
or how something works.

b. Generic structure:
1. General Statement/Introduction
It is about the phenomenon issue which is to be explained. It is to position the
reader.
2. A Sequenced Explanation of the Stage (Explanation Sequence)
It consists of sequenced explanation of why or how something occurs, or a series
of chronological steps which explain “how” or “why” something happens.

c. Language Features:
1. Focus on generic, non-human participants, or things.
2. Use of simple present tense.
3. Use temporal and causal conjunction.
4. Sometimes, use of passive voice.
5. Use of action verbs.
6. Use of noun phrases.
7. Use of complex sentences.
8. Use of technical language.
