Functions of audible alarm:

1. The exiting vehicles cuases the signal to light and emit an audible alram to alert the pedestrian,
and warn them of impending danger.

2. To detect and prevent unauthorized person from walking through the vehicle entrance.

3. Avoid head-on colissions between vehicles entering the same alley.

Exit station had too many close calls with people walking through their driveway as the vechicles were
driving up.

The management now feels they have taken the proper precautions to have a fighting chance in court if
an accident happens.

Where the public sidewalk crosses a vehicular exit for a parking structure, a vehicle-triggered
audible and visual warning may be useful for all pedestrians, especially those with visual and
hearing impairments.
The following are recommended: the system should:
1. Have an alarm that will not be confused with an Accessible Pedestrian Signal;
2. Have an alarm that will not be confused with a heavy vehicle back-up sound;
3. Have an alarm that is volume responsive to ambient sound; 5 dB above ambient noise level, and
a maximum of 89dB is suggested as a starting point.
To improve further, also recommends a pedestrian sensor systems that can advise the exiting motorist
of the presence of approaching pedestrian traffic.
In Canada, complaints of too loud audible alarm has been answered with:
“The overhead audible pedestrian warning at the entrance of our parking garage is a
requirement of the City of Toronto’s Transportation Department as the garage opens directly
onto the sidewalk. Since this is the case, the audible warning system is exempt from the Toronto
Municipal Code (Noise By-Law, Chapter 591, Section 591-3).

Safety is a priority over and above Noise.
