Threaded Connection Evaluation Criteria
Guidance Notes
In accordance with GP 42-10: No threaded joints or fittings shall be used between
1 pressure vessel or main pipe line NPS 2” or above and the first block valve
isolating a piping system. This valve shall be flanged or may be socket-welded
with a flanged joint immediately downstream,
In accordance with PSME No. 16.0 Section 2.2: Threaded connections for process
piping are not permitted on permanent LPG service. Threaded process piping
may only be used downstream of welded or flanged isolation valves for temporary
applications required for maintenance, shutdown or temporary operations. Each
such temporary installation must be subject to the MOC procedure. The use of
threaded connections for instrumentation shall be minimized and wherever
practical shall be downstream of a welded or flanged isolation valve.
Seal Welding NOT Required
Instrument (S-1, S-2, 8-3, etc. line classes) and drain piping downstream of
primary block valve.
Control valves, relief valve equipment connections, instrument connections, union
nuts, thermowells, tubing fittings and sampling valves.
Threaded connections that are needed for frequent disassembly to pumps or other
mechanical equipment.
Screwed plugs in VALVED vents and drains.
Galvanized pipe and fittings.
If current specification is a threaded line class.
Seal Welding Required
Orifice taps
UNVALVED hydrostatic test vent and drain connections after hydrotest
Evaluation Required
If work is being conducted because of a leaking threaded connection or otherwise,
all NEW components will be up to current specification. This can be completed
with an entire system upgrade or a partial approach up to the FIT Engineer's
discretion.
Bullplugs will be evaluated under the same consideration. If the particular plug
has leaked, it can be repaired up to and including seal welding. Bullplug seal
welding to be performed on a piece of equipment with multiple threaded plugs
such as heat exchanger channel nozzles or a pump case should include all
connections to eliminate the potential for future leaks and duplication of work.
In the ease of threaded connections where there is no visible leakage and the
requirements referenced previously are met then no corrective action is
required.
