    There are three types of questions that can be asked in a structured interview: direct questions that use auxiliary verbs like do/did/have/are/were and ask who, what, when, where, why, how; imperative questions that ask the interviewee to tell about something; and indirect questions that use phrases like "Could you tell me" or "Can you say something more about" followed by a question without an inverted structure. Indirect questions are meant to elicit more information in a less direct manner than direct questions.

    Direct question

    • Do/Did/Have/Are/Were you…?

    • Where/When/Why/How/Who/What…?

    Imperative

    • Tell me (a little bit) about…

    Indirect Question

    • Could you tell me…?

    • Can you say something (more) about…?


    Indirect Questions
    The first part of the question follows a formula

    • Could/Can you tell me …

    • Could/Can you say something (more) about …

    The second part of the question is NOT inverted

    • … where you studied biology?

    • … where did you study biology?

    • … how long you’ve been studying this subject?

    • … how long have you been studying this subject?
