How to conduct a structured interview


Three types of ‘questions’
Direct question

• Do/Did/Have/Are/Were you…?

• Where/When/Why/How/Who/What…?

Imperative

• Tell me (a little bit) about…

Indirect Question

• Could you tell me…?

• Can you say something (more) about…?


Indirect Questions
The first part of the question follows a formula

• Could/Can you tell me …

• Could/Can you say something (more) about …

The second part of the question is NOT inverted

• … where you studied biology?

• … where did you study biology?

• … how long you’ve been studying this subject?

• … how long have you been studying this subject?
