Linux runs in anyone of the above mode. You can switch to another mode by using
telinit command.

abgeek@geeknepal:~$ telinit 6

This will switch to 6 runlevel and restarts the system.

You can view current runlevel by :

abgeek@geeknepal:~$ runlevel

Runlevel defaults can be changed by configuring /etc/inittab file
