Very worryingly the research also stated that 40% of the children surveyed who are between the ages of'8 and 10 are speaking to strangers online. Technology can undoubtedly be of great benefit to pupils, however irresponsible and inappropriate use of technology, social media and communication platforms continues to be a major concer which can have a profound detrimental effect on children’s wellbeing and safety. ‘The topic of intemet safety is covered in our classrooms and we must all be vigilant in addressing this concer in our school ‘community. Our pupils are asked not to engage on any platform with anybody that they do not know in real life, to engage appropriately when communicating with their real friends and to abide by the terms of use of all social media and ‘communication platforms, in particular the age restrictions set by the apps themselves and by the Data Protection Act 2018 (users of WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Messenger and Twitter must be at least 16 years of age). It is vitally important that these comerstones of intemet safety apply at home. It is imperative that children are not only taught about intemet safety but also that their use of communication platforms is monitored and appropriate for their age. I ask you to take the time to speak to your children about use of technology, social media and communication platforms. I recommend that you always have access to any and all social media and/or communication platforms that they may use and that you check today on your children’s online communication activities. ‘Arnumber of cases of inappropriate use of technology by pupils outside of school time have been reported to teachers recently. I have seen first-hand the damaging effects of inappropriate use of technology on pupils; however whilst cyber safety is addressed in school, unfortunately neither I nor any other staff member can prevent these issues from arising without the engagement of all parents and guardians in terms of consistently and vigilantly monitoring technology use at home and ensuring that itis appropriate at all times. Websites such as www. webwise.ie and www.gov.le/en/campaigns/be-safe-online can give guidance to parents on internet safety and today I am also sending home a “Get With It!” cyber safety booklet produced by the Office for Intemet Safety which may assist parents and guardians. I will send home three additional information booklets over the coming weeks. 1 appreciate your support in ensuring that cyber safety isa priority for all families in the school, that children’s use of technology is appropriate (in terms of content and age of use) and that it is consistently and vigilantly monitored in the best interests of child safety and wellbeing, Thank you.
