The FI-EDI interface is intended to connect a bank communications system to the SAP R/3 system. Companies
use these Bank Communication Systems to send their payment transaction data to their house banks and to
receive account statements etc. from banks to close the financial loop.

From the SAP side, the FI-EDI interface is based on IDoc technology, which is independent of EDI standards.
The following data can be transferred using the FI-EDI interface:
• R/3-Outbound messages:
Payment orders, direct debits
IDocs are transferred from the R/3 System to the Bank Communication System.
• R/3-Inbound messages:
Debit advices, credit advices, bank statements, lockbox data
IDocs are transferred from the Bank Communication System to the R/3 System.
• Status report:
The Bank Communication System sends a status report to the R/3 System on the progress of the processing
of the outbound IDocs.
Bank Communication Systems perform the following tasks related to EDI processing:
• Conversion of data: IDoc ↔ EDI message
• Message and Interchange Handling
• Communication
• Administration of partner profiles
• Monitoring of processing
Certification of an Bank Communication System involves technical testing of the interface between the R/3
System and the Bank Communication System. The transfer of outbound IDocs, inbound IDocs and status reports
is tested. Also, the inbound IDocs are tested whether their content corresponds to the outbound IDocs.
