How to perform simple linear regression by hand?

First it is important to know what us simple linear regression. It is a statistical method that allows us
to summarize and study relationships between two continuous variables. The equation y’=a+bx,
plots one independent variable (x) against one dependent variable (y). A linear regression is where
the relationships between your variables can be described with a straight line. Some examples of
statistical relationships are: height and weight, alcohol consumed and blood alcohol content, vital
lung capacity and pack-years of smoking, etc.

A linear regression is simple when there is a single independent variable. Regression

analysis is used to find equations that fit data. By a linear regression we can apply the
method of least squares to find the line that best approximates the data.
We have to define and identify 3 variables:
n: the number of data in the analysis
x: the independent variable
y: the dependent variable

n X Y XY X2
1 12 200 2400 144
2 10 150 1500 100
3 14 300 4200 196
Total 36 650 8100 440

We have the equation: y = mx + b.
