CONNECT (5 mins.)
MATERIALS
Students are seated on the rug next to their writing partners.
Teacher: "As you know, ASM goes from Kj all the way through high
school. Some of you might have brothers, sisters, cousins, or family
friends who are in our high school. Turn to your partner and tell them what
you already know about the high school here at ASM.”
Students share with their writing partners. Teacher chooses several
partnerships to share out to the whole class.
Teacher: "Today we are going to learn more about the high school
program at ASM. | am about to put an image on the SmartBoard. Take a
look and in your mind make a list of all the things you notice.”
Teacher displays image on SmartBoard:

Teacher (after 30 seconds of think time): “Tum to your partner and tell
them all the things you notice.”

Teacher: "One unique thing about high school at ASM is that students
have the opportunity to get a special diploma called the IB Diploma. IB
stands for International Baccalaureate, which is a curriculum shared by
high schools all over the world, To get the IB Diploma, students have to
work very hard, take special tests in six different subject areas, and write
a 4,000 word essay about a topic that they choose. A 4,000 word essay is
over 15 pages long! If you were doing the Extended Essay and had to
choose your topic today, what would you write about? Turn and tell your
partner.”
