In the project that “secretaria de salud” has of putting an specific fiscal measure in the
sugar beverages, they give different arguments such as, Mexico has an enormous public
health problem, this type of beverages are the causes of chronic diseases such as
hypertension and diabetes.

Moreover, the propose is to put a specific taxing called IEPS (impuesto especial de
productos y servicio) that applies to the companies that produce and sell any kind of
products that in an excess of consumption can cause different types of diseases, the IEPS
is planned to be of 1 peso per liter in the case of the beverages and its proportional to the
milliliters.

In addition, there has to be more information about the alternative of results of increasing
the IEPS in this beverages and the stop of consume of them, because it is also proved that
these products cause certain addiction in their consumers and 1 peso per liter may not
affect in the decision of buy in it or not, and the solution may neither be putting a higher
number to the IEPS, because due to the addiction, the consumers may stop buying or
having access to other things that affect their finances, rather stop buying these type of
beverages.
