Bosch® VE or VP30 Fuel Pump Driveshaft Failures
Bosch® VE or VP30 Fuel Pump Driveshaft Failures
Core Issue
Tier 2B engines with Bosch® VE or VP30 fuel pumps are ‘experiencing broken driveshafts.
Confirmation
Tier 2B engines with Bosch® VE or VP30 fuel injection pumps.
Tier 2B engines utilizing the Bosch® VE or VP30 fuel injection pump have had customer complaints of no
start, low power, engine stall, and/or engine shutdown,
An inspection during troubleshooting reveals that the fuel pump driveshaft is fractured at the end of the
keyway toward the fuel pump housing
This failure can occur due to the fuel pump gear design that creates a high stress point on the back of the
keyway on the pump driveshaft
The fuel pump gear and/or gear housing can become damaged.
Resolution
‘The mounting studs and nuts on the fuel injection pump can be inspected for any signs of damaged threads
The fuel injection pump and fuel pump gear, Part Number 3936021, can be replaced at the same time. To
Prevent future failures due to fuel pump loosening, please refer to the fuel pump support bracket Procedure
005-033 (/qs3/pubsys2/xmi/en/procedures/40/40-005-033. html) in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual,
83.9, B4.5, B5.9 Series Engines, Bulletin 3666087
All failures and information must be reported to Service Engineering through a Product Incident Report (PIR)

Contents
This Technical Service Bulletin announces the release of a new fuel pump drive gear, Part Number 4932713, and the
obsolescence of Part Number 3936021, for QSB and B-Series engines
The center hub on Part Number 4932713 has been extended 3 mm to allow the gear to contact the driveshaft away from the
machined keyway.
‘The web holes on the new fuel pump gear have been changed to help distinguish between the old and the new gear. See the
illustration below.
‘The old fuel pump gear, Part Number 3936021, is obsoleted and superseded by Part Number 4932713.
The installation procedure for this part remains the same,
Note : This is @ product improvement and is not subject to campaign.

005-037 Fuel Pump Timing
General Information
Pump-to-pump timing is extremely critical
Pump timing that is off by only a few
crankshaft degrees will cause:
1, Poor performance — starting and
power
2, Excessive smoke and emissions
3. Poor fuel economy.
Engine pump timing begins with the timing
of the fuel injection pump drive gear to the
camshaft gear.
See the table below to determine which
letter on the fuel injection pump drive gear
is aligned with the camshaft gear.
