‘A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics for Grade V
1. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the Grade V pupils should be able to:
a. identify the different kinds of polygons;
b. actively participates in searching and taking pictures of polygons around the school
premises; and
precisely give the number sides and angles of a given polygon.
Il, Subject Matter:
Topic: Identifying Polygons

Teacher's Activity Pupil’s Activity
‘A. Routinary Activity
“Good morning, class!” “Good morning, Ma'am!"
“Let us pray first.” (One studentwill lead the prayer)
(Checking of Attendance)
“Class how are you today?”
“Okay! That's great. So, are you ready to listen
to ournewtopictoday?”
“Now, let's begin witha groupactivity. Are you
ready?”
B. Motivation
Group Activity: (The student will be dividedinto | (The students may come up with the following
five. Each group will be given withmaterials | answers.)
and instructions written onit. Every group are
given 3 minutes to answer the activity)

C. Presentation
Very Good. Group 2 got the correct answerto
the guess the word game which is POLYGONS.
Now, letme introduce to you the different
types of polygons. Would someone read this
definition of polygon for me?
Thanks. Do you know that polygons are named
accordingto the numberof its sides?
Okay! Now, let’stake a lookat the figures with
group 1 came up with. (While pointing at the
triangle, the teacher will ask the students.)
What shape is this? Can anyone tell me what
makesa triangle different fromothershapes?
e
ee
Polygon is a dosed plane figure made up of
three or more line segments joined attheir
endpoints.
Triangle
A triangle has three sides.
Ithas three angles.
“tei” which means “3”
(The teacher will write these properties below
theshapeon the board.)Nice answers! in additiontoyouranswers,
triangle hasa prefix “tri” which means “3”
Let's proceed with the next polygon. (While
pointingat the quadrilateral, the teacher will
ask the students.) What polygon is this? What
can you tellme aboutit?
Continue by explaining that “quad means four’.
‘Then, write quad means four below the
quadrilateral.
Let's proceedwith thenext polygon. (While
pointing at the pentagon, the teacher will ask
the students.) What polygonis this? What can
youtell me aboutit?
What is the prefix of pentagon? What does
“pent” means?
Continue for hexagon, heptagon, octagon,
nonagon, and decagon. (Students should be
able to identify the number of sides and
possibly angles for each polygon.)
That's good class. know that you'llfinditeasy
to name of identify the different types of
polygons. Now, can somebody give me the
answer? What doyou call to a polygon having
equal sides andequal angles?
D. Analysis
You got! Now, let’shave ashort activity
before youtake the quiz.
Usinga ruler, draw the followingregular
polygons inside each box.
1. Aregular polygonwith 3 sides
2. Aregularpolygonwith 4 sides
3. Aregular polygonwith 6 sides
4. Aregular polygonwith 10 sides
‘Quadrilateral
‘A quadrilateral has four sides.
Ithas four angles
“quad” means “four”.
(Write these properties belowthe shape onthe
board.)
Pentagon
Apentagon has5 sides
Ithas five angles.
“pent” means “5”
(Write these properties below the shape onthe
board.)
(The students will continue toidentify the
numberof sidesandangle for each polygon.
They will also be thinking aheadand already
have the prefix forhexagon,heptagon,
‘octagon, nonagon, and decagon.)
Regular Polygons
1. Aregular polygon with 3 side:
2 Aregular polygon with 4
3. Aregular polygon with 6
4. Aregular polygon with 20 sides
