Inthis book, I've attempted to translate my pedagogical method into print. ‘This
‘methodology has been largely experiential and verbally oriented. My work in teaching and
staring whatever tips and insights I've gained over the years with younger drummers has not
relied on the use of too many drumbooks; [ hope, then that this book will, by virtue of some
intrinsic value, justify its own existence and find a place in the drum world.
Many hanks to: Rck Matngly, who so expertly helped to put much of the text together,
John Cerllo, who gave: me the opportunity to write and present these ideas; Masamichi
Asis of JazzLife Magazine; my mother and faher, who originally inspied this and most of
ry musical ideas; Frank Balu for his help wih the transcriptions; Bill Ludwig TI and
Steven Ross & Associates, who helped provide photographs; and Mutsuko Mano, for giving
mea quict place and a computer with WordStar with which to work (actualy, this book was
vwiten largely on the Macinash compute).
Toall ofthe above T express my gratitude and share of any credit; for any esors, {alone
‘cept responsibilty.
This book is dedicated to the memory of Shelly Manne, Collin Walcott, and Buddy Rich,
