This educational issues lesson plan aims to teach students about dress codes in schools. Students will gain an understanding of the issues around dress codes through studying a specific case and participating in an informal debate. Their understanding will be assessed based on their debate participation. The lesson will begin with an introductory presentation on dress codes and the main arguments for and against them. Students will then take part in a jigsaw activity to examine the case study before being assigned sides for a debate on whether dress codes are necessary in schools.

Learning Objectives Students will gain a fuller understanding of the issues surrounding dress codes in schools, through a specific case study and participating in an informal debate.
Assessment Based on each student’s participation in the debate, we will be able to assess the depth of their understanding on the issue and whether or not they understand both sides of the argument.
Materials We will need to provide enough copies of the article for each student to have.
Introduction We will start with a quick slideshow presentation introducing the issue and going over some of the main arguments both for and against the use of dress codes in schools.
Body We will continue by having a jigsaw activity to allow students to look at the case study and work together to understand it (about 5 minutes). Then we will assign each group a side for the debate, we will give them 3-5 minutes in their debate groups to form their arguments.
Closure The last 10 minutes we will have a debate about whether or not it is necessary to have a dress code in schools.
