The first Wado-Ryu Indo-Japan Karate Seminar was conducted at Rush Academy, R.
A Puram on the 16th
and 17th of September, 2017. Many Karateka from all over the country from states like Assam, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and even some karateka from countries like Oman and Nepal participated in this seminar, which was hosted by Sensei Donald Tyson, style chief of Wado-Ryu Karate in India. Sensei Tyson is the son of the late Renshi Stanly Cruz, who trained under the great Hanshi Toru Arakawa and also founded Wado Ryu Karate in India. Sensei Shigeru Kato, 7th Dan Black Belt and Vice Secretary of WadoKai, Japan, Sensei Koichi Shimura, 7th Dan Black Belt and General Secretary of Wadokai, Japan, and Sensei Naoyuki Koyama, 7th Dan Black Belt and Standing Director of Wadokai, Japan were the chief guests to this event which was attended by Karateka of ages 3 – 50. Over the course of the 2-day seminar under the tutelage of the masters from Japan, younger karateka were taught the fundamentals of karate, and educated in the basics of the Wado style, and its unique factors. Adult beginners learned basic fighting techniques and Kata, while senior karateka practiced advanced fighting techniques, grapples and so forth. The goal of the seminar was to educate and create awareness among Karateka about the efficacy of Wado Ryu Karate, one of the four major styles of Okinawan Karate. Since Karate has been included as an event in the upcoming 2020 Olympics, preparations have already begun worldwide, with many Karateka training for the prestigious event. In India, too, the many karate bodies have already begun grooming their students for this purpose. There is a lot of talent in our country that needs to be nurtured and appreciated. Sensei Tyson, a former world champion karateka, has a lot of experience in competitive Karate and is seeking to prepare young and skilled karateka for the highest level of competition in the world, the Olympics.
