Grade 4 Multiplication and Division Math Miss Gordon

Inquiry Question How do we use multiplication and division in our daily lives?

Overview In our daily math each day covers a specific GLO. Since multiplication and division are touched on in our daily
math these outcomes are not completely new to my students. I will ensure my students have a concrete
foundational understanding of multiplication before moving onto division. My unit plan may need to be flexible in
order to account for more time alloted to ensure all students are successful with the foundation of multiplication
and then division. I will spend more time on multiplication than division since multiplication and division are
similar. Division can be solved through a manipulation of multiplication. I understand that math is often a
difficult subject for students, because of this I have allowed my unit plan to be flexible. I will have a weekly
check in with my unit plan to ensure I am on schedule and adapt where necessary. I have begun to incorporate
daily small group instruction in my lesson plans to focus on small group intervention. These small group
interventions allow for me to work closely with my students and provide a personalized instructional method. I
group my students by either required intervention, for students who are not yet successful, or similar learning
styles/levels of success.

Rationale I believe the logical flow of addition to subtraction to multiplication to division helps ensure students have the
foundation knowledge required to succeed. My goal is to create real world applications for my students to
ensure they are engaged in the learning material. Both project based learning assessments were created to be
cross curricular between social, language, and as part of the geographical location road trip the class has been
focusing on since the beginning of the year.
Since my previous addition and subtraction lesson plan took longer than I expected I was unable to complete
my project based learning assessments. However, during this unit I will completed a summative project based
learning activities that incorporates addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Conceptual ● Skip counting

Understandings ● Patterns
● Mental Math Strategies

Objectives- ● Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division of numbers by:

SWBAT ○ using personal strategies for multiplication and division
○ estimating sums and differences
○ solving problems involving multiplication and division
● Describe and apply mental mathematics strategies to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 × 9 and related
division facts.
● Demonstrate an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (2- or 3-digit by 1-digit)

Learning ● Daily math questions completed in whole class instruction

Activities ● Small group instruction completed daily
○ Teacher determined required interventions
○ Teacher guided mini-lessons
● Project based learning
○ Creating a Farm

Resources ● I am continually researching and exploring new online resources.

○ Dreamscape, newsELA, knowledgehook, learn 360
● Picture books from the curriculum laboratory at the U of L & the school/classroom library
● Activities that I have created/found online

Diversity I will provide as many problem solving strategies to my students as possible. I will accept any of these
strategies as acceptable forms of expressing an understanding. I have access to technology and a variety of
manipulatives within the classroom that I will incorporate to allow my students to display their understanding.
Wherever possible I will provide my students with an ‘assessment checklist’. This menu will offer a variety of
ways that students can display their knowledge. These will include manipulatives, written, drawn, video
recorded, or other valid assessment modalities my students introduce. I will begin to have more thoughtful
questions with my students during my rgual check in times to determine how my students best learn. I will be
asking my students to explain their preferred learning strategies to better plan for future instructional and
assessment modalities.

Assessment I will provide formative assessments through each of my lessons to ensure all my students are gaining the
foundational knowledge required to be successful. My summative assessments will be gathered through project
based learning such as in the creating a farm project. During these assessments students will display their
understanding through real-world applications. To ensure my students are not falling behind I will have daily
small group instruction to discover and solve any concerns.
