Preparation of Phthalimide
Theory
When phthalic anhydride is treated with amide such as urea, then, white ppt.
of phthalimide is formed.
Apparatus
Beaker, Burner, Round bottom flask, Filter paper, Funnel, Tripod stand.

Chemicals and Reagents

Phthalic anhydride 5.0 g Urea 2.0 g Cool water and ice

Equation

(Phtahlic anhydride) (Urea) (Phthalimide)

Procedure
Take 5.0 g of phthalic anhydride and 2.0 g of urea in a round bottom flask and
heat it on a sand bath. Temperature should be constantly measured and maintained
between 130-135°C. Wait for some time till reaction start with froathing and
temperature is 160°C. When froathing settle down, remove the flask and add cool
water into it and shake it well, until all phthalimide is dissolved in H2O and add cold
water or ice. Crystallize the product with cold water or ice. Then, finally, filter the
crystals and dry them.
