OBSERVATION 4 Past Simple: People didn't wear jeans. Divide the class into small teams of two to three players and appoint team secretaries. Give the teams eight minutes to spot the deliberate mistakes and for the team secretaries, with the help of the rest of their team, to write down the answers in complete sentences. The team with the most correct sentences is the winner. Hints: Afterwards you could ask the class what people did wear, did write with, etc. in 1850. ANSWERS: People dirt watch television TV. People didn't eat hamburgers. People didn listen to disco music. People didn't have computers. People didnt use vacuum cleaners. People dda’ drink Coke. YOU DOT LIKE THIS Past Simple: You didn't tum off the tap. Give each player quite a complex task to mime, e.g. cleaning his or her teeth, starting a car, doing the washing up, making an omelette, shaving, changing a wheel, telephoning from a coin box. Each player in turn then mimes his or her task. Explain that it is not important if their mime is not very ‘good but that they should try to represent all the different actions associated with their task. (e.g. cleaning teeth — turning on tap, unscrewing top from toothpaste, picking up toothbrush, putting it under the tap, etc.) ‘The rest of the class watch each mime and say afterwards what, in their opinion, wasn't represented, @.g You didn't spit out the water. You didn't turn off the tap. The player who mimes a task where nobody can make such comments is the winner. DETECTIVE STORY- ‘ROMEO AND JULIET" Past Simple: Did somebody break a glass? Were they murdered? Read the story to the class, explaining any difficult vocabulary. Explain that the class must play detectives and find the solution to the problem The story Romeo and Juliet are lying dead on the floor of the bedroom. There is some broken glass and some water on the floor. The door of the room is locked. The window is open. ‘The class then ask you questions to find the solution to the story. They can only ask questions which have Yes/No answers, e.g.Were they murdered? Did somebody break a glass? Give hints to elicit questions, e.g. ‘Ask me questions about the broken glass. Was the glass from a flower vase? etc. Ask me questions about the water on the floor. ‘Ask me questions about the open window. ‘Ask me questions about how they died. The solution Romeo and Juliet are goldfish. A cat came through the open window and tried to fish them out of the bow! with its paw. The bow fell off the table and smashed on the floor.
