1. Use A before all words that begin with consonant sounds. a pet, a door, a hysterical joke.
2. Use AN before words that begin with vowel sounds. An apple, an eraser, an hour, an
honest man.
3. Exception: If words start with vowel but with the sound of consonant use A. Words that
begin with h, y, u, eu. A union, a European, a horse.
