Subject: TEDMED 2017

Hi XX,

Based on your previous recommendation regarding TEDMED 2017, we have compiled the following
information on the conference. We believe this conference would be a good opportunity for XXX to share
the work XXX has done in the gene therapy field. TEDMED’s focus on innovation and its track record of
bringing together industry leaders makes it an excellent opportunity to position XXX as an innovator across
the medical industry.

Conference Overview:

• Each year’s program has a loose theme. The 2017 theme has not yet been announced, but in
keeping with previous years, innovation will likely be a prominent topic area.
• In previous years the themes have been:
o The future of health and medicine,
o Breaking through scientific, ideological and disciplinary barriers to advance medicine,
o Applying imagination and creativity to global health issues.

Speaker Overview:

• TEDMED conferences feature 50 speakers across a variety of sectors and backgrounds. In 2016, the
Medical/Healthcare industry constituted 41% of speakers present, and this ratio was in a year noted
as being less healthcare focused than previous events.

• TEDMED speeches are all hosted for public viewing on the TEDMED site, and are also hosted on the
TED Foundation site. These videos average about 5,000 views each, with some receiving multiple
millions of views. Some heavily viewed speeches are linked below.
- Sue Klebold “My son was a Columbine shooter. This is my story”
- Mary Basset “Why your doctor should care about social justice”
- Russ Altman “What really happens when you mix medications?”
- Judson Brewer “A Simple Way to Break a Habit”
• Individual speeches have also garnered large numbers of impressions on other platforms. Sue Klebold’s
speech from the 2016 conference drew dozens of tweets and caused a spike in Google searches for her
name, according to data collected by Google Trends.

Attendance:

• The conference runs for 2 and a half days, with 850 delegates attending.
• Attendance requires an application and the payment of a $4,950 fee.
• Industry descriptions of the event usually mention its ability to bring together leading members of the
healthcare and life sciences industries with leading investors and academics.
o Because the event is so costly to attend, attendees have noted a lack of government
employees and policymakers relative to the rest of the attendees.
o The 2013 TEDMED Brochure describes the attendees of the event as being the “top minds
from medicine, the sciences, technology, business, government, education, law, religion, the
armed forces, media and the arts.”
• Virtual Attendance is offered for free to hospitals and government institutions. For corporate virtual
attendance, a $10,000 payment is required.
o Viewership statistics from this program are not provided by TEDMED
