Fraser's editions of 1871 and 1901. Since then, and largely 45a result of the interest aroused by those editions, fesh material Inns come to light, and to-day even Fraser's editions are incom- plete. In the last fiy years there have been alterations in the confus of Berkeley's writings, ‘Two essays in the Guardian which Fraser mistakenly published as Berkeley's have been discarded, and the following have been added : Berkeley's politcal tact, morymously published, Advice to the Tore who hae taken th Oaths (1715), his satire in manuscript, The Ish Patriot or queries xpon ‘quoi, several sermons, reiscovered editions of his publications, about 150 new letters, including one or two important letters tothe Pres, and some minor pieces, such a8 an early version of his Vener nth prospect of planting ats and learning in Americe, and the Wain ‘wright Latin epitaph. It might also be said that the Philesophical Conneniares—that. pair of notebooks which Fraser published in the wrong order and misnamed Connonplace Book of eccasonal utapysiclthoughts—has had to be so drastically re-handled that itis virtually a new document to-day. ‘Anew edition of Berkeley's writing, his books, tracts, sermons, letters, etc, is urgently needed, and the present series of volumes is intended to supply this need. "; Our editorial aim, fst ana lax as been to put out an accurate, scholarly, and complete teat—for if these respects Fraser's work was uneven. Where more thai one edition was published by Derkoley, we print throughout tis eres the text ofthe latest fc editions, giving al significant variants in an apparatur at the foot of the page. A few editorial notes have been added, marked dis tinctvely as such ; these notes are explanatory, rather than ‘expaitory, Introduction, historical and exegetical, have been farnshed for each piece, the editor of each volume being alone responsible for the views therein expressed. Tn the minutiae of editing, capitals, punctuation, spelling, ec., alolute uniformity has not been found possible. Berkeley's
