Cable Sizing Criteria Explained

This document provides a formula for calculating the full load current (Ib) needed to size electrical cables properly. The formula divides the rated power (PR) by the square root of 3, multiplied by the supply voltage (V), the power factor (cos φ), and accounting for equipment efficiency (η). This allows engineers to determine the design current to ensure cables can safely carry the intended load.

where:

Ib = Load current or design current, i.e. the current intended to be

carried in normal service
PR = Rated Power (kW or kVA)
V = Supply Voltage (V)
𝜼 = Efficiency of equipment (per unit)
𝟇 = Load power factor (per unit)
