LOCK DOWN Lock Down procedures are used when a threat is imminent (outside or inside) to the staff and students of a school. A Lock Down signifies that safety and survival must take precedence over education. Reasons for ordering a Lock Down may include an armed intruder or an outbreak of iolence within the school. A Lock Down signifies that the threat is already inside the school, so movement within the school is restricted, but external doors should remain unlocked to enable first responder the quickest possible access. Individuals in charge of children are expected and required to assess their specific circumstances and act with their best judgment and in accordance with Move, Secure, Defend protocol. Violent situations may erupt suddenly and teachers should be prepared to lead their own individual classrooms in Lock Down without prompts from the administration should they become aware of unsafe situations. IF YOU ARE THE ONE ORIGINATING THE LOCK DOWN All staff have the ability and permission to place the school into a Lock Down IF any situation poses an immediate threat of violence to students, staff or visitors. The individual who identifies the threat has these responsibilities: Get to the nearest safe place © Place the facility in Lock Down by communicating with the office in the safest possible way - shouting, phone call or text. MOVE themselves from dangerous situations altogether. When this is not possible, students and staff should be prepared to SECURE their position to prevent intrusion. As a last resort, students and staff should be prepared to DEFEND their position. 2, Students in classrooms should follow the directions of teacher/staff and move to a secure location in the room, 3. Students should maintain silence and stay off electronic devices. 4, Students outside the classrooms should quickly move away from violent/dangerous situations, seek shelter or escape the building and moving off site 5. Students outside the building should evacuate the area - moving to the off-site evacuation location, For Teachers: 1, When notified of a Lock Down teachers will begin the process of MOVE, SECURE, DEFEND. MOVE themselves from dangerous situations altogether. When this is not possible, students and staff should be prepared to SECURE their position to prevent intrusion, As a lust resort, students and staff should be prepared to DEFEND their po: ion. 2, After listening to be aware of potential threats, teachers should proceed quickly and safely to their door. Students, staff'and credentialed visitors in hallways should be directed to the nearest safe place, 3. Teachers should then lock the classroom door, move students to a secure location in the room, close interior window blinds and turn off the lights. 4. Teachers should remain calm, reassure students, and enforce silence in the room. Teachers should discourage students from communicating on their phones. Teachers should communicate known facts as distributed by the administration to their students. 8. Teachers should assist in barricading the door, prepare to evade an intruder and/or to defend themselves as the situation requires. 6, Teachers will take roll of personnel in classroom when it is safe to do so. 7. Ina Lock Down, a classroom door should not be opened after it has been locked, 8. Communications will come as quickly as possible from the principal/designee. 9. Attend to first-aid needs within your classroom. Call 911 if there are medical concerns and notify the front desk if possible. Updated 11/11/2018 10. When the situation is safe, evacuation will take place under the direction of law enforcement and/or building administration, Roll will be taken again once students have reached the off-site evacuation locations. 11. The Lock Down can be terminated by the principal/designee or law enforcement personnel, who will go to each classroom and inform the teacher that the Lock Down is over. This will NEVER occur via a PA announcement. Update November 5, 2018 To “clear” a Lock Down: The SROs will move from door to door in the building and check that the doors are locked. Upon entering the classroom they will ask four questions. Please prepare your teachers and any substitutes in your building to answer these questions clearly. © Isthere a teacher present? © Do you have all of your students? © Do you have any extra students? © Do you have any medical emergencies? © Doyou have a written roll for me? © So, you will need to take roll on a lunch slip as soon as you are in your “lock down” area, add extra students to the bottom of it. For Principal/Office Staff: 1. The building principal shall be responsible for coordinating all Lock Down activities. Their primary role in a Lock Down situation is communication including communicating with the District Office/ Law Enforcement and providing information to faculty and staff so they can make informed decisions. If possible, the principal/designee (usually someone with camera access) will announce the nature and location of the threat to enable students and staff to make informed decisions. 2. During a Lock Down, a principal should be stationed in the main office to coordinate Lock Down activities. 3. The principal/designee will announce the Lock Down by radio on the district channel (LE.Ch. XX) the following: Lock Down in progress at: according to the RADIO ANNEX 4. The Lock Down can be terminated by the principal/designee or law enforcement personnel, who will go to each classroom, open the door and inform the teacher that the Lock Down is over.
